I have hit a dead end in my search for the home of James Malone. I know quite a bit about him but not prior to coming to the USA. Here is what I know and information I have.

  • Based on his death certificate, i believe him born September 3, 1826. This is taken from his death certificate from New York City in 1868.
  • He was a Stone Cutter. I have this from many documents in the USA.
  • He arrived in the USA at New York City circa 1843 according to his death certificate. Other documents lead me to believe it closer to 1849 but the death certificate appears very specific.
  • He married in the USA to Ellen Walsh in 1853.
  • He was Roman Catholic.
  • He had a Sister named Eliza (Elizabeth?) who also came to the USA. She married David Hayden though I've not found the marriage informaiton in the US.
  • Her dates are a little more confusing but she appears to have been born circa 1820.
  • Based on James and Eliza family names of their children, I speculate their Father was named Joseph and Mother named Mary.
  • My DNA shows Leinster and Munster ancestry.
  • James death certificate and marriage certificate did not list his parents names.
  • I belong to Find My Past, Ancestry and Family Search at this time. I am unable to make any progress in Ireland of James Malone
  • I guessed Dublin for his home area but have no information to back that up at this time.

That is all the information i currently have. If you are able to lead me in a direction, i would greatly appreciate it.

  • Dennis:

I looked on the subscription site Roots Ireland and there were 58 James Malone baptismal records from 1821-1831 and only one had a father named Joseph.

James Maylone baptized September 3 1826 Inistiogue RC parish Co. Kilkenny father Joseph Maylone mother Mary Parker

There were 18 Elizabeth Malone baptismal records from 1815-1825 but none had a father Joseph and the Inistiogue records go back to 1810.

Keep in mind that a good number of RC parishes do not have records back to the 1820s and that Roots Ireland does not have all the available RC reocrds across Ireland.

I also looked at the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie which has Dublin city RC records. I searched the records for 1820-1830 and although there were about 10 James Malone baptismal records, none had a father Joseph.

You best bet at this point is to contact your top DNA matches (hope they respond) and try to find matches with Malone connections who know more about the family origins in Ireland.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • I think you found them!  I actually believe my Great Grandfather, John Power is from Instogue, Kilkenny also. This would be an interesting situation. Thank you so much . I'll dig into all the possibilities you have provide.

I thought i had sent some additional information but don't see it, so here it is again. I am so grateful for your help and sincerely thank you.

I am attaching Grandpop James death certificate from New  York City. This is  where i received some specific information that you used to confirm back to me. Perhaps there is something there of importance that i missed?

As you can see, the date you have for Baptism is consistent with Birth Date given. So that is helpful. Using naming conventions the names Joseph and Mary Parker as parents also sounds correct. The only issue is the spelling of Malone as Maylone. But maybe that is common. So anyway, i am just providing a bit more information. I've not been able to make DNA progress either through Ancestry or 23 and me yet on the Malone family. I'll keep working on it.
I thought it was interesting also that you have Instioge which is where i have focused on for the Power side of my family So, things may be coming together. Again, thank you so much.
By the way, i am in the process of trying to get Eliza Malone Hayden's death certificate to see if that sheds any additional light on the parents but i really think you found them!

  • Hi Dennis, my ancestors also. I’ve just joined this site so it’s 2 years on from your post but hopefully you see this. Their home was at Ballyshane,Inistioge, Co Kilkenny through many generations. My dad and I have done a lot of work on the family tree.

  • Hi Martina. My ancestors are from close by, going back to William Malone (1798-1872) of Curraghlane (and later Cooleen). I have several DNA matches which throw up links also with the line going back to Joseph Malone and Mary Parker of Ballyshane (if the Ancestry trees they are linked to are correct). Do you have much information that far back? These are low cM value 'distant cousin' matches (perhaps as distant as 6th cousins), but it would suggest that William and Joseph should be fairly closely related, cousins (even siblings!) but nothing much more distant.
