Hi, I am looking for my grandfather who, according to DNA tests,  is a son of Patrick C. O'Loghlin ( 1848-1921) and Margaret O'Loghlin (Flaherty) (1855-1937). Their sons are: Peter (1877-); Michael (1879); Denis (1884-); Laurence (1886-1929); Terence (1890-) Bryan (1893-) and Joseph (1896-1964). They were born in Callaun, Lisdoonvarna. As per census 1901 they lived at Mount Elva Clare. I believe Joseph married Margaret McDonagh in 1919 in Ballyvaughan Catholic church and  was a farmer in Ballyvaughan but not sure what happened to the others. One at least, my grandfather,  travelled to England and was in Maccesfield in 1934 working in Insurance. He  could be any one of the brothers except Laurence, as he deceased 1929. To confuse the situation I was told my grandfather may have been called  Joseph   but I believe this Joseph O'Loghlin stayed on the family farm, possibly at Ballyconnoe South . I have a close DNA match with Joseph and Margaret's grand daughter Annette Walsh and I know my great grandparents are Patrick C and Margaret O'Loghlin.

  • hi ,

I have been looking at your case. From a DNA perspective if you and Annette share a grandparent then you are either full first cousins ( both grandparents on one side shared) or half first cousins if you only share one grandparent of that couple. You are second cousins if one of the other sons of your great grand parents is your Grandfather. If you google the Shared CM Project it may help to decipher what your exact relationship is to Annette.

I looked at the records for your great grand parents and I was surprised that I could not find any record of them in the 1911 census. I found one daughter Delia living close by to her original home with a relative, Susan Malony and working as a dressmaker. Another son, Michael may be the Michael O'Loughlin working as a servant in Kilcornan in 1911.

I looked in the UK records and I found a Terence O'Loughlin living in Lancashire England which  is not too far from Macclesfield. He appears to be married to Edith O'Loughlin and has lived at 96 Hunter Street, Middleton and Prestwich during the years 1934 to 1939. I got this from the electoral Register.

Maybe checking the other counties around Macclesfield for the other brothers might throw up something.

I hope this was of some help,

    Majella

  • Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it, especially finding someone with a close link to Macclesfield at that time. And that's for doing it so quickly.
