Hello 

I am looking for my Great Grandfather. 

His name was Thomas Staples.

He left Ireland in the mid 1800's and emigrated to England to Dorking where he worked as a gardner. He met my Great Grandmother there - Martha Chitty and eventually they moved to the Isle of Wight and I believe Thomas Died there in the early 20th century.

    I have attached the marriage record and the Bentley family tree both from ancestry.

    The latter shows that both Thomas and his father John were born in England.

    My 92 year old mother was sure Thomas was Irish.

    Looking at that information it is clear he wasn't.

    It may be he worked in Ireland. She says he worked as a gardner at a Stately home somewhere near Dorking. 

    However it looks like time around Croydon before moving to the Isle of Wight.

    Having a Grandmother born on the island gave me some cred when I visited there in 1984.

    Martha Edith Staples was my grandmother.

    Now my Curiosity is piqued though - where is the Bentley connection ?

    Was that through Penny Staples?

    There is a marriage record for a Herbert Staples and Harriet Bentley in Croydon - but Herbert's father is Charles Staples [attached].  Hopefully you can make the connection.
