Looking for the Parish of James Ling who immigrated to Canada.  Also for Joseph Meagher who also came to Canada.  Both lived in Nova Scotia Canada.  Both in the eariy 1800's.

  • In the Griffith's distribution there are 8 LINGs and 34 LYNGs in Ireland, 23 in KILKENNY Co., 9 in WEXFORD Co., 1 in Carlow Co., and 1 in ROSCOMMON Co.

There are no parishes where both MEAGHER and LING-LYNG are found in the Griffith's.

There are 18 MEAGHERs in KILKENNY Co., 15 in LAOIS Co., 110 in TIPPERARY Co., 13 in WATERFORD Co.,  11 in LONGFORD Co, in the Griffith's records  They are in many other counties but at much lower numbers (less than 10).

MacLysaght's The Surnames of Ireland has this to say about LING-LYNG:

<Ling, Lyng - Apart from a few O'Lynns of Ulster who become Lyng, this name belongs to Cos. Kilkenny and Wexford.  It is an English toponymic which appears among the Cromwellian 'adventurers' who acquired lands in Co. Tipperary.  Whether the Kilkenny Lyngs are descended frim that family or, more probably, are ? Floinn, formerly called Fling in Co. Waterford, has yet to be finally determined.>

I would advise you to begin your search in County Kilkenny where the most of both families are found.  This only will work if both knew each other in Ireland before their marriage.

    All the best,

    James McNamara
