Hi, I'm looking for Patrick Callan and wife Mary Fitzpatrick. They would be my gg grandparents. I have not been able to find them in any immigration or naturalization records from Ireland to the USA. They lived in New Windsor, Orange County, New York.

In the 1875 US Federal Census I found:

  • Mary (b: in Ireland abt 1815), no husband (possibly deceased)
  • Eliza (b: in New York 1858
  • Margaret (b: New York abt 1859/60)
  • George (b: in New York 1862).

In the 1880 US Federal Census I found:

  • Mary, no husband
  • Catherine (b: in Ireland 1852)
  • Eliza
  • Margaret
  • George

I acquired baptism information from St. Patrick's Church in Newburgh, Orange County, New York and found that Mary's husband was Patrick. I have Margaret's (my g grandmother) death certificate that confirms parents names.

Not listed in these census records is Patrick who I believe to be another child of Patrick & Mary. I have a marriage record for him and second wife, Matilda Dudley, from the same church as above. The only problem is that from the church I received his mother's maiden name as 'Fitzgerald' instead of 'Fitzpatrick'. I ordered a copy of his death cert from New York State Dept of Health, but that could be 8-10 months before I get it. So, I'm hoping that it was just transcribed incorrectly.

Patrick and Matilda also lived in New Windsor, Orange County, New York, as did many Callan's. Patrick's first wife was Susan Barton.

Children of Patrick & Susan:

  • Joseph
  • Edward
  • George
  • Mary

Children of Patrick & Matilda:

  • Catherine
  • Anna
  • William
  • Helen
  • Matilda

According to the US Fed Census, depending which year you're looking at, the younger Patrick arrived between 1860-1870, and was born between 1846-1850. Patrick died 24 Mar 1928 and is buried in St. Patrick's cemetery in Newburgh, New York.

Patrick married Susan Barton abt 1873. He married Matilda Dudley 3 Jul 1889.

From the first siting of Patrick in the 1875 census, he lived in New Windsor until he died.

Thank you very much for any help you can provide.

Allison

  • In case you have not checked there are many Callans listed on the Castle Garden website for the time frame you listed.

Here is a shortener URL to the website:

  • Thanks Bob for the link. I have checked Castle Garden before, but not knowing exact date it's hard to tell which 'Patrick' is the right one. Plus there isn't very much info in the records to go on.

    Thanks again,

  • Update to my original posting dated 4 Dec 2012...

1865 New York State Census I found:

    • Mary Callan, age 35, born  in Ireland
    • Catherine Callan, age 15, born in Ireland
    • Mary A. Callan, age 9, born in Orange County, NY
    • Eliza J. Callan, age 7, born in Orange County, NY
    • Margaret Callan, age 6, born in Orange County, NY (I believe this is my great grandmother)
    • George Callan, age 4, born in Orange County, NY

Also in the 1865 New York State Census the recorded marriages and deaths that occured during the year ending 1 Jun 1865. I found in the DEATH section:

    • Patrick Callan (who would be Mary's husband), age 42, born in Ireland (abt 1823), died 25 Mar 1865 in Orange County, NY, of consumption.

I have gone through Castle Garden looking for all the individuals above born in Ireland to see if any of them come over on the same date/ship. None of them are listed together other than Patrick and a younger Patrick. Father and son? Missing in all of these names and census records is Patrick and Mary's son, Patrick (born in Ireland, who I have found later in 1880 with 1st wife and 1st child).

Now all I need is a connection!! I'm waiting on the younger Patrick's death certificate from the NY State Dept of Health, but most likely won't see it until summer. Then I'll have his parents names for sure.

    Thanks for any help,

    Allison
