Looking for the ancestors of John Patton born 1839 in Down His father was called William, his mother's name not known. John arrived in New Zealand in 1855 aboard the ship "New Era". He went to live and work in Otago where he married Euphemia Campbell, daughter of Scottish settlers, in 1865. They had four children. John drowned in the Taieri River in October 1873 leaving a wife and four small children.
John's second son, Peter was my great grandfather. Nothing much is known about this branch of the family. I would love to know more about this side of the family including the reason John came to New Zealand. I imagine it related to the Potato Famine but it could well be that he was a young man seeking adventure.

Hi Alison,
There are no birth/baptism records of John Pattons with father William in any county on www,rootsireland.ie/
There is 1 record of John Patton born 1839 + - 6 years in Down (so either 1833 or 1845)
There are 2 born in 1839 1 Padin in Leitrim and 1 Peyton in Roscommon
There are 62 Pattons in the Tithe Applotments 1823-34 (free to search) but most are in Donegal
There are no family trees on ancestry that have any more than you have.

In addition to Col's suggestions, I looked at the 1863 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Down. If William did not emigrate and was living in 1863, he may be one of the eight William Pattons listed below.
