I am looking for information on my ancestor, Peter Lettis (alternate spellings: Lettus, Lettuce, Lettice). He was born 28 Oct 1818 and arrived in the US 31 Dec 1840.

I was told our family was from Meath, although I have also recently found some information that may indicate the family was at one time in Co. Offlay so I have posted on that message board also.

Peter's father's name I believe was Michael. His mother was Catherine Finnan Lettis. He had several brothers and one sister: Patrick (1819), Andrew C (1824 or 1827), James (1829), and Catherine (1828). Patrick and Catherine both married into the Torrance family--Peter married Agnes Torrance (although this may have been after he left for Scotland) and Catherine married William Torrance. Andrew and James eventually joined Peter in Troy, NY. Peter was a potter by trade.

I have found several people with the Lettis surname in Griffith's Property Valuation.

John Lettis who rented land in the parishes of Ballyboggan and Castlejordan. He had a house in Knockasally.

Mary Lettis rented land with a house in the town of Killaskillen in the parish of Ballyboggan.

Thomas Lettis rented land with a house in Toornafolla, in the parish of Castlejordan.

I am not sure if any of these people were related to Peter--although he did name his eldest son Thomas, so perhaps there was some relation to Thomas Lettis.

I would appreciate any information you could provide. I don't know much about Peter's life in Ireland, although I have found quite a bit of information about his life in Troy, NY.

Thank you for your assistance--this is a wonderful thing you are doing. I appreciate that you have volunteered to help people like me!
