I am looking for information on my ancestor, Peter Lettis (alternate spellings: Lettus, Lettuce, Lettice). He was born 28 Oct 1818 and arrived in the US 31 Dec 1840.
I was told our family was from Meath, although I have also recently found some information that may indicate the family was at one time in Co. Offlay so I have posted on that message board also.
Peter's father's name I believe was Michael. His mother was Catherine Finnan Lettis. He had several brothers and one sister: Patrick (1819), Andrew C (1824 or 1827), James (1829), and Catherine (1828). Patrick and Catherine both married into the Torrance family--Peter married Agnes Torrance (although this may have been after he left for Scotland) and Catherine married William Torrance. Andrew and James eventually joined Peter in Troy, NY. Peter was a potter by trade.
I have found several people with the Lettis surname in Griffith's Property Valuation.
John Lettis who rented land in the parishes of Ballyboggan and Castlejordan. He had a house in Knockasally.
Mary Lettis rented land with a house in the town of Killaskillen in the parish of Ballyboggan.
Thomas Lettis rented land with a house in Toornafolla, in the parish of Castlejordan.
I am not sure if any of these people were related to Peter--although he did name his eldest son Thomas, so perhaps there was some relation to Thomas Lettis.
I would appreciate any information you could provide. I don't know much about Peter's life in Ireland, although I have found quite a bit of information about his life in Troy, NY.
Thank you for your assistance--this is a wonderful thing you are doing. I appreciate that you have volunteered to help people like me!

Hello Dorothy
I found a Micheal Lettice in the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38), He is listed in the town land Lewellensland in the parish Castlejordan in King's county (Offaly)
As far as I know he civil parish of Castlejordan covers areas in both Offaly and Meath, but the Roman Catholic parish only covers areas in Meath.
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/leinster/index_me.htm#Meath
Some records of Lettice family births in Ballyboggan, Castlejordan came up when looked on family search.org
https://familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Alettice~%20%2Brecord_country%3AIreland%20%2Bany_place%3Ameath~I don’t know if any of this will fit with research you have already done yourself but I hope it is of some help.
Best regards Michael

Thank you Michael,
I did find the entry for Michael Lettice in the Tithe Applotment Book you recommended. I'm just not sure how to confirm that this is my ancestor since on Ancestry it didn't list any family members such as wife or children that would help me confirm it. I know that Lettice is a fairly uncommon name compared to some Irish surnames, but I was still hoping to confirm a wife or child connected to Michael Lettice before I officially add the information to my family tree.
Do you know how I might go about trying to find a marriage record for Michael Lettice or any record of his children? I've been searching on Ancestry and FamilySearch.org for some time but not had much luck with any records from Ireland.
I appreciate your response and suggestions--it's wonderful to be able to make this connection with someone in Ireland.
All the best,
Dorothy
