I'm looking for birth, death, marriage, immigration records for the Ruddy, Reilly, Lee and Masterson families. I know the Ruddy and Masterson were from Glasdrumman, Poles. My great great grandfather and grandmother were Thomas Ruddy and Rose Reilly, I believe all their children (Bridget, Catherine, Mary and Anne) immigrated in Massachusetts. I am unable to find any record of birth for any of them. Two of the girls married Masterson brothers, Thomas and James, when they were in the US; two of the other girls married Lee brothers, Philip and Patrick. The parents of the Lee's also immigrated, Patrick and Mary, as well as another son, John.
I would greatly appreciate any help in finding more information of any kind about their lives in Ireland.
If travel restrictions are lifted I will be in Cavan as part of a tour group in October.
Thankyou!

  • Hi Kathy,

Thank you for getting in touch.  Can you give me any dates for your family members?  The reason I ask is that information depends on those dates as to whether records are available or not.  Civil registration started for Catholics in 1864, for free look at this site https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp b… despite that some were not registered, prior to that RootsIreland has some church records, again many registers are missing, it is a subsccription site, but you can see what is available for the parishes you are searching.

Also available for free are the records at https://genealogy.nationalarchives.ie, do exhaust all available there and hopefully you will find what you are looking for.

For emigration records you may find your family on https://www.statueofliberty.org/ellis-island/, do vary the spelling.

Start with what you know and build from that, widen your searches to include younger members in the hope that you will bring them within record dates.

Cavan Genealogy can be commissioned for research they can be contacted as follows:

    Genealogy Centre Contact Details
    Irish Family History Foundation
    Cana House
    Farnham Street
    Cavan
    Co. Cavan
    Email: enquiries@rootsireland.ie

You could also contact the local paper linda@anglocelt.ie give them photos and if you have any stories that might resonate with the readers they may print it for you.  Do look for transcriptions of graveyards, volunteers undetake this work and publish results, though this activity has stalled during the current pandemic.

I hope you are able to travel in October and are able to take time out to visit Cavan and in particular the townlands that your families came from.

    Regards Carmel
