  • Hi,

Can you provide any more information on this family? Is Caroline's last name Sweeney? Approximate dates when the children were born? Did they stay in Ireland? If not, where did they go and when?

    Regards- Mary

  • Thanks Mary. I have been researching my ancestor Ellen Sweeny (born 1813/1814?). She married William Murphy (m. 1831/1832?) with whom she had two children – Matthew, born 1834 and John, born 1836. Ellen was transported to Tasmania in 1842 and never saw her two boys again. I have information about her life in Australia, but limited details about her life in Ireland before she was transported e.g. Where was she born? What happened to William Murphy (Ellen had a letter stating that he had died before she was transported)? What happened to her two boys?

  • Jack,

I checked RootsIreland and Irishhgenealogy for more information about Ellen's life in Ireland but did not find anything.

On Ancestry there are trees with Ellen. Most show her from Limerick with no records to support. In 1842 she was convicted of larceny in Kerry, sentenced to 7 years, and transported from Dublin. You probably have this information-

2 Ellen Murphy's on this voyage, the other one was 17 years old and tried in Dublin. Ellen Sweeney/Murphy/Dale was transported for stealing £10. Ellen was married to William Murphy and had 2 children, they seem to have been left behind in Ireland. Ellen produced a letter on board, stating her husband was dead. Ellen was quiet and orderly on the voyage, she was 5'5" tall, 28 years old, could not read or write and was widowed. 24/12/1844: TOL 4/7/1848: CP 1845: Married John Dale (Eden 1836) he was free. They had 2 children in Tasmania then moved to Muntham Station in South West Victoria and had another child there. They then moved to the Trentham and Kyneton area in Victoria. 1899: Ellen died in Campaspe.

Firstly,The data supplied by contributor D.Wong:I can confirm is correct. Ellen came out with Ellen Talbot, convict. They were both sent to Cascades womens factory prison. The two Ellens married two convict brothers,John and Jeremiah Dale,at a double wedding at C.of E. at Battery Point,Hobart,on 8/9/1845.The church is still there in use today.

From one of the 148 trees on Ancestry.

Arrived on board the ship "Hope", 7 years transportation for stealing from employer Mr Stragal of Kerry. She might have been a dairymaid. Transported with her friend Ellen Talbot, also from Limerick. The two Ellens later married brothers John and Jeremiah Dale.

Jack, some trees suggest that William Murphy was still alive when she left but the fact, she had a letter stating his death and that she remarried he probably died before 1842.

Sorry, I am afraid I am not much help.
