  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information without a more specific place of origin. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

Do you have any documentation pertaining to the family that mentions any place names at all? This can include wills, marriage/death records, census records, letters, diary entries etc.

There are a couple of places online where you can search, but please note these websites do not contain complete collections:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

Have you tried looking into the family?s emigration? Sometimes more infomation can be found at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. You may be lucky and find a place name here. For information on US immigration records check http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

You could also try searching in Griffith's Valuation for some record of William. This is a property valuation survey that was carried out in Ireland 1848-1864. It doesn?t give any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch

Some other websites that may be helpful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

    Genealogy links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/kilkenny/index.html

    Ireland Gen Projects: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlkik2/

You could also contacting the Family History centre in Kilkenny for some assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: kilkennyfamilyhistory@rothehouse.com

I hope some of these links. Once you have found their parish of origin more avenues of research will open up to you. Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

    Genealogy Support

  • I have still yet to find a parish but I have found some more information about William John Hurley. He went by John and his wife's name is Margaret Cassin/Coshen. This information I found when searching for Joseph's family on findagrave.com. Joseph has a brother, Michael Hurley born about 1832 in Kilkenny, Ireland. I believe Michael immigrated in 1851 as well as Joseph. I haven't found any passengers lists but on a 1901 census record it states for both that they immgrated in 1851. Michael was a Farmer and Joseph a Laborer.

Thank you for posting additional sites to search. I have been on Familysearch.org but havent had much luck.

I don't have documentation such as wills or marriage certificates. I have been seaching for a record for Joseph Hurley and Catherine Wall, I believe they were married about 1861 in "Irishtown" St.Columban Perth, Ont. Canada but the Diocese will not do a search for me.
