There are almost no surviving records from before 1820 for Moyarta parish, so we may learn more from you than you will learn from us.

There is an 1829 Lynch grave in the local Kilcrona Graveyard, but it doesn't give a townland address:

As you say, a Michael Lynch was still a tenant of Nicholas Westby in Doonaha West in 1855, recorded in Griffith's Valuation.

However, at least one Lynch family continued to live in Doonaha West up to the 1911 census:

Have you considered submitting a sample of your DNA to one of the big DNA companies to see if you share autosomal DNA with any West Clare residents? There is a very active Clare Roots DNA project with 464 members, many still living in Clare, at

There are three Lynch members, one with known roots in Moveen West townland in Moyarta parish, and two more (siblings) who have learned from their DNA results that their Lynch ancestor, hitherto known only to be from "Ireland", almost certainly also came from Moveen West.

Or do you have any male cousin still bearing the Lynch surname who has submitted or might submit a DNA sample for Y-DNA analysis?

Greetings, Paddy! Many thanks for your quick and thorough response to my post. I greatly appreciate it and am excited to connect with someone in Clare. Since my ancestors Tom and Mary Lynch emigrated 200 years ago, I know it's going to be tough! But even if I cannot absolutely identify anyone who is my relation, I looking forward to experiencing Doonaha, which looks like a lovely place. (For some reason, when I hit the "return" key, I am taken to the beginning of this message. Thus, it's a long, run-on paragraph. I will number for some clarity.) In response to some of the points you offer: 1) I have applied for membership to both the Facebook IGP's Co. Clare Ireland Genealogy Group and the Clare Forum. Good tip! 2) I am hopeful about the Patrick Lynch buried with his daughters in the Kilcrony Graveyard. The Tithe Applotment Books of 1827 have only one Lynch living in Doonaha, Patt. He was gone by Griffith's in 1855, when only a Michael Lynch was living in Doonaha. Perhaps Patt was my Thomas's father and Michael was his brother who remained in Ireland. The two young daughters the memorial was erected for—Ellen and Bridget— would then be Thomas and Michael's sisters. Thomas named two of his daughters Ellen and Bridget. 3) Is Lynch's Pub still in existence? 4) Sadly, Thomas had two sons in America, but both died young, "without issue," as they say. I have done the standard Ancestry.com DNA test, which shows me to be 35% Irish, 29% Western European, 21% Scandinavian, 6% Iberian Peninsula, 2% British, then dribbles. After reading Ancestry.com's literature about shifting populations and trade, along with my own research, I believe the Scandinavian and Iberian could be influences that came to Ireland. Too bad I can't get a Y-DNA test. 5) The church the Lynches and other people from Doonaha would have attended in 1800 was St. Criodan's in Doonaha? Or Holy Ghost/Spirit in Carrigaholt? 6) That's enough for now! I will be in touch again. Best regards, Deb Moore

3) If I remember correctly Lynch's pub became known as The O'Curry Arms, called after the famous historian from Doonaha, Eugene O'Curry.  It is no longer functioning as a pub, but the name is still over the window.  See

4) The next thing to do with your AncestryDNA results is to copy your data to GEDmatch.com and post your kit number here.  You will find instructions on the GEDmatch website or at

Then we will be able to compare your DNA directly with that of several descendants of Lynches from other parts of Moyarta parish.

There are two churches in the parish, at Carrigaholt (Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in 1832-1833, while Fr. Malachy Duggan (1780-1849) was parish priest) and Doonaha (Church of the Holy Spirit, built in 1808).  I'm not sure how you got the dedications moved around!

4) I have followed your instructions and downloaded my DNA results to GEDmatch.com. I now have a message that says: “Kits marked with ** have been tokenized, but have not completed batch processing. They are available for one-to-one comparisons, but not one-to-many comparisons.” I’m not sure where to post my kit number. It’s A147087. Can you do that for me?

     Then, should I also try to download a GEDCOM file somewhere with my ancestors' names? If so, where?

Paddy, I successfully posted my GEDCOM file to GEDmatch.com, too. Hooray! I will play around with it soon and see if I can learn anything. Will other people know to compare their results to mine? .........Deb

One more question, Paddy: Does my Ancestry.com DNA (autosomal) test cover the mtDNA, too? Mary King of Doonaha was my mother's mother's mother's mother's mother. Thanks, Deb

     Since my last note to you, I have done quite a bit of exploring on the GEDmatch.com site. I think I understand it pretty well, but not perfectly. For instance, it says to be a match you and the other person have to have at least a 700 SNP match, but I see nowhere that that info is listed.

     Interestingly, my #1 match “on GEDCOMs linked to my DNA kit” is Catherine Waldron/Catherine Amery Brown. When I clicked on her GEDCOM, however, I could not access her family tree.

    I have 1 and 2 matching segments of DNA to two other people, but neither seems to have a GEDCOM. I would email them if I knew we had the 700+SNPs, but, as mentioned, I cannot find that piece of information.

     (For Paddy's FYI, I emailed my response to your post directly, but am now posting my response here.) Brooks, I just checked the GEDMatch kit number Paddy posted for you and learned that you and I and you and my brother are not DNA matches. Sorry that the only King I know is Mary King, wife of my 3rd great grandfather, Thomas Lynch of Doonaha. They married c. 1820 and emigrated to America by 1824.
