I'm researching Ellen Lynskey. Ellen was born in County Mayo about 1832. Her father's name was Michael and she had a sister named Catherine. Possibly another sister named Mary.

Ellen and her sister Catherine both immigrated to the US ending up in Cincinnati, OH where she married William Conroy. Eventually, Ellen and William moved to Urbana, OH where they raised their family. Ellen and William are buried in Urbana, OH.

Any information on the Lynskey/Linskey family would be appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Hi Mary Jo . . .

    Welcome to I.R.O. . . .

Because our regular (more professional).. researchers .. have passed over your query  . .

    I expect . . they had a quick look . . a brief search . . and decided . . given your info. .. they couldn't help . .

    So . . I had a look . . mainly because I have a Son-in-Law . . named Lynskey .. in Galway County.

    I hasten to add that . . I am far removed from Co.Mayo . . hence . . no local insights ....

    First . . I searched ..." Tithes Applotments " 1823 -1837 . . a Tax Roll from that time . . ( photo below )

This is a list of all the Lynskeys ... smallholders . . for Co.Mayo .. 10 (only) in total . . with Townslands.

Because Catherine & Ellen have later Emigrated to the U.S. I then looked for a Mary . . in. .
    the 1901 Census .. and found . . (see below ) ....
This Mary ...lists herself ...as " Lynskey " ???.... having a Daughter who married a Brannan . .
( this Mary does not appear in the 1911 Census .. presumed passed )

    Next . . " Griffiths Valuation " 1847 - 1864 . . . again a Property Tax roll . . .

    Here are 12 Lynskeys . . 2 (two) of whom are Michaels . . giving Townslands . . .

None of the Above . . leads to any definite info. re the Family you search for . .
    But . . lots of clues . . as to te where and whats . . .

    A further help site is . .

    So Mary Jo . . Best I could do . . .
Good Luck with your continued searching . . .

    Cheers . . Eamonn.

  • Hi Eamonn,

Thank you for the information. I have briefly looked at Griffiths Value but I need to learn more about it to determine if the Michael Lynskey's listed are my ancestor.

I'm afraid the information you found for Mary wouldn't be correct. Mary married either a Charles McDermott or Patrick McDermott, a family history of the McDermott's list the name as Charles, a death record lists the name as Patrick. Mary's husband, according to family history, was a sea captain who died at sea in 1850. In 1854 Mary immigrated to the US with her three children and lived in Urbana, OH at one time. I have one DNA match to a descendant of Mary's, so not much help there.

I will check out the other sources.

    Thank you,

    Mary Jo
