Mabel Egan is my paternal grandmother, the daughter of John Egan and Catherine O'Leary. She Married James O'Connor in St.  Mary's pro cathedral Dublin 18th Dec. 1909. I have the cathedral marriage, and the normal marriage certificates. Details match. I then asked the cathedral if they could give any further details, and they stated Mabel Egan had been living 14 Hill Street, (no town or city named), I assume Dublin. The other detail, Mabel was baptised May 1891 St.Michael's Limerick.. St. Michael's has no record of such a baptism. The normal marriage certificate stated Mabel was of Full Age, which I believe is 21 or over, which means Mabel was born at least 1888. A request to Roscommon for birth details of Mabel came up negative.   James and Mabel moved to London probably early 1930s They we're livivng 8 Porten Road Hammersmith 1937 (from Electral Roll). This is also address on my birth  certificate 20-8- 1937. I next found them 1949 at 144, Bromley High St. This was the home address of both Mabel (27-10-62) and James (26-4-63) death certificates, though both died in the same hospital. Mabel was named as Mary on the death certificate, aged 74. What I am interested is information on Mabel prior to her marriage 1909. Thank you.

  • Looks like Mabel was Mary at birth. See the last record at the link below. Mary also had siblings Albert 1885 James 1887 Christopher 1891

The only marriage I could locate was a John Egan/Kate Leary on February 12 1882 in Ennis RC parish Co. Clare. Not sure if this is the same couple. Record located on the subscription site Roots Ireland. Here is the civil record and this John and Kate were very young.  See second record

  • Thank you, for both replies. The first I did suspect.

The second reply, I have John Egan married Catherine O'Leary 1882 Ennis, but no certificate. I believe John was a printer, so it's just a case is Kate Leary my Catherine O'Leary. As you state she was very young.

  • Roger has the correct marriage, John a Printer.

    You say………..
The other detail, Mabel was baptised May 1891 St.Michael's Limerick.. St. Michael's has no record of such a baptism.

The online records in NLI only go up to 1876.  But if you pay they will get the Baptism cert for you.
I have done this many times in different Churches.

This is the 1901 Census. No sign of Mabel/Mary

in the 1911 census it says they had 7 children and 5 still living.

I noticed in some trees that Albert is always Death Unknown.......try the USA. I am not in Ancestry world wide now but there is a record of him in the USA.

  • Margot, Thank you for your comments. St.Michael's church Limerick did say they had a record of a baptism of only one child of John Egan and Catherine O'Leary, I think it was Christopher, younger sibling of Mabel/Mary. Equally mystified at the absence of the absence of Mabel/Mary on 1901 census. Also Catherine's age on there, it does not read right, compared with her age on her marriage certificate. But many thanks again.
