My great great great grandfather John Madden arrived in Sydney in 1838 aged 33 with his wife Jane and children John, Daniel, Ellen and Jane. His papers list him as a farm servant from Birr. I do not know his wife's maiden name. I'm seeking any information about his life and family origins.

  • Thank you, Paul, for your message.

Madden is quite a common name in these parts and for the time period, there are unfortunately few records.

Have you checked the records at the Australian side as in many cases the documentation at the destination port is better than in Ireland?

I will ask some local people in Birr if they can help.

    regards

  • Thanks very much Dolores. I just got an Australian marriage certificate for one of his sons which lists Jane's maiden name as Vallin. I'm also travelling to Ireland in a few weeks and was planning to visit the county geneaology centre to look at some local records.

  • There was a man named Pake Madden who lived on the Roscrea Road Birr years ago.  His wife was a Maryanne Mulhare from Crinkle Post Office (the old one).  I think her grandson now works in the Post Office in Birr (? Madden).  Dont know if there is any connection

  • Thank you very much for your reply Patricia. It was a long time ago that he left and there may be no family connections to be traced. I have just a couple of days ago found a census record from 1821 that lists a John Madden of the right age as a servant living in the Clavin household on Burkeshill. I've attached an image.

  • Paul,

I have passed all the information onto the Birr volunteers -- cannot guarantee anything will show up but will post here if it does.

Another suggestion would be that you contact the Offaly genealogy centre (if you haven't aleady done so) to see if there are any records at all. The Irish Midlands (Counties Laois & Offaly) Ancestry service can be contacted here:

    http://www.irishmidlandsancestry.com/content/contact/contact_details.htm

    info@offalyhistory.com / Telephone + 353 (0)57 9321421.

Please note theirs is a chargeable service - there is a form on the website to complete and a first search costs ?10.  Please let them know we sent you!

Let's hope something turns up and then the local parish volunteers can take it from there.

    Kind regards,
