Hi, I’m related to John Maher (son of Matthew Maher) and  Johanna Moloney (daughter of John Moloney).   This couple and are listed in the 1901/1911 censuses for Ballintogher/Ballyhorgan (nr Listowel, Kerry) with their children:

Bartholomew (b 1880 but birth cert states Mathias - after g/father)

Thomas (b 1882)

Kate (b 1885)

Hanora (b 1887)

Patrick (b 1890).

Bartholomew married Hanora Sullivan in 1912 and lived in Clooncolla/Ballyhorgan with their children Hanora (1913), John (1914??), Mary (1917) & a younger daughter (K?).  Hanora married Thomas Lenihan.  John had 8 children.

Patrick married Bridget Kissane in 1913, & lived in Ballintogher with Bridget (1913), Hanora (1915), John (1917), Thomas (1919) + two others born 1928 & 1934.  Hanora married fisherman David Casey.

Kate married Michael O’Brien and their sons were Jeremiah (1915) & Bartholomew O’Brien (1916) - they lived in Keel.

Hanora never married & no information found on Thomas.

I am hoping to connect with any distant relations in order to learn more about the family or anyone from the Ballyhorgan area who can help fill in the gaps of the family tree with regards their descendants.

Thank you.

Paul

  • Hello,

I'm the great great grandson of a Bartholomew Maher, born 1830, came to the States and settled Illinois sometime around 1850, married Margaret Wolfe, who I believe was from Athea. Their daughter Johanna married my great grandfather James Patrick Solon, who was born in County Mayo. I've never been able to find out much about Bartholomew's Ireland family. It appears there could be a connection here.

    Thank you,

    Bart

  • Hi Bart,

Thanks for replying - I think you may be right!   I haven't looked this far back before but from what I've found from another's online family tree, your Bart was from Trienearagh which is only 8 miles east of Ballyhorgan, where my search centres. I see Athea's not that far away either.    As your Bart emigrated I guess any link would be further back in time, rather than a descendant of his.  I have come across a couple more Barts and the Wolfe name so looks like I'm going to be kept busy .....  The naming pattern can be quite useful I've found.  I'll keep you updated should I ever find a connection to Matthew.

    Thanks again,
