Looking for variations of this name in Armagh...My great grandfather James Majury, lists Tullyelmer as his place of birth around 1836.
Other spellings of this name include, McJ(G)ury, Maj(g)ourie, Maj(g)uery.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

  • Paula,

His birth is well before the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland (1864). So you would need to rely on church records to find his baptism. What denomination was he, do you know? I check Griffiths Valuation for Tullyelmer in 1864 but there were no Majury (or variant spellings) listed in the townland then.

Tullyelmer is a small townland with just a few farms and a mill (in the mid 1800s anyway).

  • Thank you....I've just now come across your reply!
By 1864, James was married to Margaret Cunningham and living in Lisburn.
I found their marriage registration and our surname was spelled, "Maquery"
They had at least one child, a daughter, Sarah Jane born in 1864...found under the name, "Maguery "
There a two sons unaccounted for,
James William born March 18 year unknown and
William John born July 27, 1866
By 1867 I found the family in Glenavy.
    James' religion was Presbyterian.
His father's name may have been, William.
He may have had a sister named, Mary Ann.
I believe the name has been misspelled in many ways.
    Thanks again for your reply,
    Paula Majury
