Hello.

I'm looking for my 2nd great-grandparents Michael & Hanorah Mangan. They had 4 children that I know of – James, Kate, Johanna and Maurice (who was my great-grandfather born 1864 in Glin, Limerick).

Kate emigrated to South Australia in September 1876, and the rest of the family followed in November 1881 so the records I'm looking for are all prior to those dates.

Kate & Maurice both married in Australia and neither James nor Johanna married – James was deaf, but not sure if that was from childhood or if he went deaf later.

Any help is greatly appreciated.  Jenny (nee Mangan), Adelaide, South Australia

  • Hi Jenny,

    Thank you for your message.

Here are some sources of records prior to 1880 where you may be able to find the family:

    Church Records:

Prior to 1864, all births, marriages and deaths were recorded by the local parish chruch. Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Glin  parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=West%20Limerick&parish=Glin&churchid=884

Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

There are some Church records also available at:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

    Civil Records:

Civil registration became mandatory in Ireland in 1864 so any BMD?s after this year will have a civil record. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

    http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

    Land Records:

These were taken in Ireland during the 19th century. Although they do not offer any genealogical information they are useful as census substitutes as they record what families (although only the head of the family is named) were living in a specific area at the time. There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

    Genealogy links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/limerick/index.html

    Limerick Library: http://www.limerickcity.ie/Library/

You could also try contacting Limerick Genealogy for assistance, however a fee may apply for their services. Here is their email: research@limerickgenealogy.com

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi again

Thanks for all the info you supplied.  I was able to follow up quite a few of the links and found further info for my family!

I now know that Michael Mangan married Hanorah (Nora) Dore in Feb 1852 in Athea Catholic Parish. I also now know that his parents were James Mangan & Mary Treahy and Nora's parents were Maurice Dore and Margaret Creedon - which has really helped in my search and will hopefully help me to go back even further.

Also, thanks for also helping me to find that Michael & Nora had more children than the 4 I knew about, but am now trying to follow up with - they had a daughter Mary (b.1857) and another daughter Judith (b.1859). I haven't been able to find further info on these 2 girls, who didn't emigrate with the family.

I also found they had a son Patrick Michael (b.1870) who died as an infant (1871).

So, thanks again for all the wonderful info you supplied which helped me to further my search!

    Kind regards, Jenny Mangan
