Hello,
My name is Kim Mangan and I live in Sydney, Australia. I have recently joined your group in order to try to find out more about my 3rd great grandparents. Bridget Sheehy born approx 1825 Askeaton and James Mangan (or Patrick) same year. Married approx 1841, then according to a previous post I found, Bridget remarried James Lysaght (Lysaught) in 1846. A son, James Mangan, was born in approx 1847? They migrated to Australia in approx 1852. Son James Mangan died in Sydney in 1879, aged 33, buried Rookwood Cemetery. Bridget died 1881, also buried Rookwood.
My questions are: What happened to Bridget’s first husband? Were there any other children born to Bridget and James Mangan and then to James Lysaght? Any record of which ship they took to Australia? The names of Bridget’s parents?
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Kim

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Roots Ireland (subscription site) had the following transcriptions of church records: 1843 marriage of Patrick Mangan and Bridget Sheehy, 1845 baptismal record for James Mangan, 1847 marriage record for James Lysaght and Bridget Sheehy (likely Patrick Mangan died but there would be no records to confirm), parish register for Askeaton parish with records starting in 1829 (likely Bridget's baptism if held in Askeaton occurred before records are available), three baptismal records for children of James Lysaght and Bridget Sheehy. Note the 1851 record for Patrick Lysaght occurred in St. Michael's in Limerick city. I assume this is for the same couple but possibly there was another James Lysaght and Bridget Sheehy?? We would not have access to records regarding their outbound ship.
Let me know what questions you have.

Gday Roger,
Thankyou so much for such comprehensive information. I have struggled a bit with finding Mangan ancestors in Ireland because unfortunately some of the death records in New South Wales have inaccuracies which send you off on a wild goose chase. I assume when James Lysaght and Bridget came to Australia they brought all four children with them, so now I have more family to look for! Is it correct to say that when someone (Bridget in this case) remarried after a first short marriage they didn’t tend to use their married surname from the first marriage? In any case, I will have further questions for you in the near future, I will just sort out what you have sent me first!
Best Regards,
Kim

Kim:
You would think that she would have been Bridget Mangan on the marriage record and the baptismal records but I have seen a number of second marriage records where the bride reverted to her maiden surname. Have you taken a DNA test?

Hello again Roger,
With reference to your question regarding a DNA test, yes I have done one, but interestingly enough I haven’t had any matches through my Mangan side! I’m hoping as I build my Ancestry tree with the additional information you have provided I will start to see some new matches.
Cheers,
Kim

I assume you tested with Ancestry DNA. To further expand your matching pool, you may want to look into Gedmatch www.gedmatch.com Gedmatch is a volunteer run site where you can upload your raw Ancestry DNA dtata and see if you match people who tested with another company (and also loaded their data to Gedmatch).

Hello Roger,
Firstly I am assuming you are still there! As you can see it has been more than a year since my last post on this subject, but as I am coming to Ireland soon I thought I would touch base!
I will be in County Limerick for two days only, 30th and 31st July. Sadly, it is a very short trip, bit I will try to make the most of it by looking up some ancestral records. I am just going to focus on the Mangan line I have been investigating, which almost certainly means a quick visit to Askeaton. I am staying in downtown Limerick city, though. I was wondering if you could advise me the best place to go in Limerick city to look up parish records for the period 1820 - 1860. Is it also worthwhile to visit the churches in Askeaton (I believe there are two). I would be grateful for any advice.
Before I sign off I would like to see if there is one more birth record you can track down. I am looking for a birth record for Mary Mangan, born to Patrick Mangan and Bridget Sheehy, approx 1841-1842 in Askeaton. She would be the older sister to my 2nd great grandfather, James Mangan, born Askeaton in 1875 to the above.
Once again, many thanks, and look forward to hearing from you!
Regards,
Kim Mangan (Sydney, Australia)

Hi Kim!
I did not find a baptismal record for Mary Mangan on the subscription site Roots Ireland.
I will alert our HQ about your trip and they will provide you advice on researching in Co. Limerick.
Have a great trip!

Dear Kim:
Many thanks for your post to the message board and for the details about your upcoming trip. We have several local volunteers who may be able to assist you. I'm forwarding this post to two of them and they should be in contact via a reply on this thread.
As you will be staying in Limerick City, a trip to the Limerick Library which has very good local history archives, may be worth a visit. In addition, as Roger stated, the Askeaton parish registers are online through the National Library of Ireland website (free) but these registers are in poor condition and many entries are nearlly illegible. In addition, from my own research, the transcriptions of this register may not be correct. It is worth your looking at the scans to see if there are other baptism entires and the link for the register is here: https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0860
If you have any other questions, please let me know and I will do my best to assist you.
Kind regards,
Jane

Many thanks Jane,
As I have very limited time, I plan to go to the library on Tuesday 30th, I believe it is open until 8pm.
On Wednesday 31st July, I will drive to Askeaton to spend some time there.
I look forward to hearing from one of your volunteers to see if they can point me in the right direction. Regards, Kim Mangan
