Can anyone help.. My 2xgreat grandmother was Margaret Curley. Born in Roscommon in 1827.
She married William Joseph Gamble around 1848 and had a child William in that year. By 1851 they are in Islington London. Williamjnr died in 1853. My great grandfather Francis Joseph was born in 1855. In the 1861 census, Margaret's sister, Mary Curley, b1830, is recorded as a visitor.
I am trying to discover which of the Curleys of Co.Roscommon were my maternal ancestors.
I would be most grateful for help. I live in Bristol UK.
Many thanks

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and they had a number of Margaret Curley baptismal records in the 1820s. I'm not sure how confident you are about 1827 as the correct year but the one 1827 record was in St. Peter's Athlone with father Patrick Curly and mother Mary Murray. Keep in mind that a good number of Co. Roscommon RC parishes do not have records back to 1827.

I was unable to find a church marriage record and did not find the baptismal record for William.

In the Griffiths Valuation conducted in the mid-19th century, the surname Gamble was almost exclusively found in the Northern Ireland counties. Is it possible that Margaret and William were married in England?

  • Dear Roger
Many thanks for your efforts. William Joseph came from County Westmeath. I have extensive information on the family. Margaret's birth date was consistent as 1827 across several census documents so fairly reliable. The census also gives us her sister Mary b 1830. That's only one record so less reliable.
I can find no record of marriage or baptism in England. They were very poor in the beginning and had several stays in the workhouse. I have the baptism for my g.grandfather in 1855.
    I really appreciate your help
    Thanks
    Clive
