Hello, I am trying to trace my great great grandmother's ancestry in county Clare and am hoping I am
barking up the right tree. Her maiden name was Margaret Howard and according to an inscription in the
back of my great grandmother's Bible she came from Milltown Malbay, was born in 1848 and emigrated to
South Australia on the "Peeress" in 1866 under the name of Margaret Meehan. She travelled with Bridget
Meehan. She married Michael Donnellan in Kapunda, South Australia. James Howard was listed as her
father on the marriage certificate and Thomas Donnellan as Michael's. I have found no evidence yet of
Margaret's birth or who her mother was and am wondering if anyone has any clues.

Hi Julie,
In the mid-1800s a survey of all the heads of household in Ireland was taken; it's called Griffith's Valuation. According to RootsIreland, there was a James Howard in Miltown Malbay:
Howard James Town Of Milltown Malbay Main Street Kilfarboy
Howard James Town Of Milltown Malbay Lane Of Main St. KilfarboyThis could be your Margaret's father.
I hope this helps.

Hi Julie,
To add to Patricia's Post, I attach some records which may be of assistance.
No record found for a "Margaret" with the Father's name as "James". Could your Margaret be recorded as "Mary"?

Thank you for your replies Patricia and McCoy, much appreciated. Your advice has given me more confidence that this is my "James Howard" and
that "Margaret" was baptised "Mary". My great great grandmother, Margaret, had a granddaughter called Mary Margaret which may add more
credence to this discovery. Also, in regards to them living in Main Street Leagard North, I have previously used Griffith's Valuation and know that
there were Meehan's living in the same street, which would explain "Margaret" and Bridget travelling together. Why she travelled under the name
Meehan, I don't know. I'm pretty sure that they were given government assisted passage to South Australia where they were to be employed as
servants. Am I likely, do you think, to be able to trace James' lineage back any further? I have had no luck so far.
Kind Regards
Julie

Hi Julie.
My name is Julie as well and I live in Adelaide, South Australia. Margaret Howard, you refer to in your posts, is the Great Grandmother of my husband.
One of Margaret and Michael Donnellan's son's was Patrick James Donnellan, who was Mary Margaret's father.
Mary Margaret married Angus Smith and had two sons. The eldest was Peter Angus (my husband) was born on 21 May 1955. The youngest son, David John was born on 03 April 1957 and died on 14 May 1997. We have been unable to find much on either Howard or Donnellan side of the family.
We know Margaret's father was James but don't know anything about her mother. We know Michael Donnellan's father was Thomas but, again, know nothing about his mother.
You mention, in your first post, that Margaret came to Australia on the "Peeress" under the name Margaret Meehan but there is Margaret Howard registered on the ship's manifest.
If you would like any information (or lack of it), that we have please do not hesitate to contact me. My email is jls1957@hotmail.com.
Perhaps we may be able to help each other (or confuse each other!)

Hi Julie.. from
I have found a site called Clare Genealogy. One of the links in this site is Clare Genealogy - Donated Material RC Baptism Records - and one of the Parishes it covers is Miltown Malbay. (you will have to scroll down to find this).
I found a Mary Howard whose father is James Howard and mother is Joan Howard. Joan was known as Susan.
Mary was Christened on 01 Jul 1848. Her sponsors were Ned Hogan and Kate Howard. The family were from Ballyvaskin, which, when I googled this town is only 3.1 km down the road from Miltown Malbay.
My husband said he thought the Donnellans were from Sixmilebridge, County Clare, Ireland, so I looked up Michael Donnellan and found his Christening on 30 Dec 1837. His parents were Thomas (which we knew) and Anna (Anne) McInerney. Thomas and Anna were married on 05 Feb 1837 in Sixmilebridge.
Hope this helps
