I am trying to find the burial site for Margaret Lydon nee Connors who died on 8 May 1899 at Illaunmore, Oughterard, in the hope that it may be a family grave.  I think her father was Dennis Connors/O'Connors and her mother was Bridgett Dunn/Dunne.  Other children of the couple were Anna, Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Mary, James and Charles as far as I am aware (it is possible that there may have been a family grave in Killcullen County Kildare).  Therefore there is also the possibility that Margaret was buried with her husband William Lydon who died on 16 Nov 1883.  Their home was in Shantalla, Galway.  Thank you for any help you are able to offer and for taking the time to consider this request.  Linda

  • Linda,

The death record for the Margaret Lydon you specified is registered in the District of Lettermore which is approx 20 miles South West of Galway city on the coast.  William Lydon is likely to have been buried in the nearby cemetery of Rahoon, Galway suburb.

I have checked the 1901 census, but did not find a Margaret Lydon residing in Shantalla.

What is the connection with County Kildare?   Oughterard, County Kildare is in the Poor Law Union of Naas.

Can you supply their possible year of marriage and where.

    Best Wishes

  • Hello McCoy

Thank you for your reply.  This is what I know so far:-

Margaret was baptised on 5 July 1813 at Aughnaneur, Killcummin, Oughterard, Galway

William and Margaret married on 14 Sep 1844 at Shantalla, Galway

Margaret died on 8 May 1899 at Illaunmore, Oughterard. The informant was Mary Lydon her daughter.

1780-1790s Margaret's older siblings are baptised mainly in Kilcullen,County Kildare. Anna the oldest child is baptised in 1787 and the location is described as Kilcullen,County Kildare/Ballymore Eustace, County Wicklow. Entries in two registers.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Linda,

    Thanks for that information.

The Mary Lydon who notified the death of Margaret Lydon in Illaunmore, Lettermore District, was her daughter-in-Law - www.irishgenealogy.ie

The 1901 census for Illaunmore - DED Turlough, records a Mary Lydon there with her husband Colman. Rootsireland.ie 1840 - 1860 has a record of a Winifred Lydon baptised in Rahoon on June 10th 1845, Mary 1851 and Mary 1855. It is likely that the Mary baptised in 1851 died .

Moycullen birth records have a Mary Connor baptised on November 11th 1809 in Coolagh. Father recorded as Dennis Connor. Mother's name not recorded. It is likely that Bridget Dunn was from this townland which is on the main road from Oughterard to Galway city, overlooking Ross lake.

    Regards,
