I am researching ancestors from Co Waterford who emigrated to Sangamon, Springfield, Illinois, USA in the 1850s, from Co Waterford. The name has been spelled variously Mernane, Murnane, Mernon, Mernin, Mernan, Merning in the many and several records I have found, census and church records, English and Latin! Bridget and her brother Thomas married, had families and died in Sangamon. There's a headstone to Thomas who died in 1891, age given 72, and his wife Margaret - natives of Co Waterford. Bridget married Henry Farrant in 1860: they both died in the early 1880s, in Sangamon. I would be most grateful if anyone could shed light on the origins of this family, parish, townland, or any little tidbit at all. With very many thanks, Gay Conroy

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and I believe I looked for all the variant names for Mernane, Murnane etc. I found a Michael Mernan baptized in Ardmore RC parish on March 19 1821 with parents Patrick Mernan and Ellen Carew. There was a Brigid Mornane baptized March 3 1822 in Kill parish but the parents were Matthew Mornane and Margaret O'Neal. There were no other records until 1832 (Michael) and 1836 (Brigid) and those records appear to be too late for your interests.
Likely your Michael and Bridget were baptized in one of the eight Co. Waterford RC parishes that have baptismal records starting 1829 or later.
I assume you have not any success in finding parents names.
Have you considered DNA testing?
