Hello,

I live in Australia. I bought an old book "fathers martyrs and queen holary rosary" 1877 in a thrift shop in New Zealand in 1987 when I lived in Christchurch.  In this book is a maraige certificate for john pickett and mary ann bartlett, signed by father herbert priest of belfast diocese of rosoit or kosoit?

I would like the family to have the book and marriage certificate if I can locate them. John Pickett is son of William Pickett, Mary ann Bartlett is daughter of josiah bartlett. Marriage was on 28th June 1877.

Thank you for any help as to finding family!

  • Cali,

Perhaps write to the church?  Maybe Picketts and Bartletts are still in the area and are members of the church.  Just an idea.

Unfortunately I don't think we will not find any current family for the Bartlett/Pickett marriage certificate.

FYI. The Roman Catholic diocese for Belfast would be Down and Connor. I doubt that there would be records which would show which RC parish in Belfast had a Fr. Herbert assigned.

I looked at the Griffiths Valuation for Co. Antrim from the early 1860s and there was no Josiah Bartlett record and no William Pickett record. In fact there was only one Bartlett record and one Pickett (shown as Pigott) record in all of Co. Antrim.

I found no death records in the Belfast area  for a Josiah Bartlett or a William Pickett/Pigott.

The 1901 census for Co. Antrim had only one person with the surname Pickett and ten Bartlett records. The oldest Bartlett was 26.

I appreciate your interest in trying to find surviving family members but I don't think we will find them in Ireland. Maybe there are family members in New Zealand?

One of our expert volunteers, Shane Wilson, did some super-sleuthing and determined that the marriage actually occured in Australia. Here is an excerpt of his e-mail message to me. I was not able to copy and paste the Ancestry index record for the 1877 marriage. If you have access to Ancestry for Australia you should be able to find the record.

"very quick one for you - I spotted that Pickett / Bartlett query and had a look  - pretty certain it relates to Victoria, Australia, and possibly the town of Koroit which was in a Shire (county) named Belfast. A marriage match with the names mentioned shows up on a Victoria index on Ancestry

see 4th paragraph for the mention of Belfast : Koroit (Wikipedia)"

  • Thank you for replying to my post about the 1877 marriage certificate. I didnt even think it could be from an Australian wedding, when I saw the information on the certificate I just assumed it was an irish certificate.

Thank you again to the people who helped me out. I'll now look into it from this side of the world!
