Hello.  Great grandparents - James Costello/e & Judith Marnane, married (?17 Oct 1852) in Bansha/Kilmoyler Parish - which I hope this area covers in addition to Tipperary.

Their children  -  Patrick  born      04/08/1853           - was my Grandfather

                           Mary                   13/01/1855          - married M Dalton

Michael               22/10/1856          - went to Australia

                           Rose                   09/03/1858                         Australia

                           Margaret             02/02/1860                         Australia

Johanna             23/05/1865          - died in infancy

                           Johanna             02/11/1866          - married M Ryan

1.  Please can you give me any information about, where Great grandparents, James and Judith lived and where they are buried?

2.  My Grandfather, Patrick Costello/e (born 04/08/1853) married Ellen Ryan 18 Nov 1896.  They lived laterly at Cordangan and had 11 children, one of whom was my father, John Joseph born 04/09/1901.  He came to London as a young man.

Can you tell me if Grandfather Patrick was married twice?  Ellen Ryan was 18 or 20 when he married her and he, was around 20 years older but all the 11 children were born to Ellen Ryan, I believe.

I would love to know where Patrick and Ellen are buried also.  (Their son Paddy and his wife Mary Walsh died together of toxic fume inhalation at the house in Cordangan on 15 August 1990 and they are buried in St Michael's Church cemetery in Tipperary).

Thank you so much for your interest.

  • Hi Valerie,

I tried rootsireland.ie for the marriage of James Costello & Judith Marnane 1852 and got no matches. However when I dropped the Marnane with the same search I got a match - 1854 in Waterford. I went through all the parishes of this record and got Ardfinnan Roman Catholic. I googled this and found it was in Clonmel Tipperary which seems to tie in with your info.

I searched rootsireland for the births of the children but only got Patrick 1853.

Unfortunatley rootsireland is a pay site so it will cost to purchase the record but it will give you ages of the bride and groom and the search for their burials will be easier.

I'll keep working on the other questions later

  • Hi again,

There are 2 marriage records of Patrick Costello and Ellen Ryan on rootsireland.ie - both in Tipperary - 1 in 1872 & 1 in 1896.

I did the parish search for both; 1872 was Silvermines Civil Parish & 1896 was Tipperary Civil Parish.

    I'll try the deaths later.

  • Hi Valerie,

I searched the graves option on rootsireland.ie for Patrick Costello and Ellen COSTELLO in Tipperary 1940 + - 20 years and got a match for each - Patrick in 1945 and Ellen 1948. The graves option doesn't allow a parish search so you will need to purchase the records to get the location of the graves.

You might like to post your message on the Tipperary board and also check Find My Parish above to see if there are any parish boards for Cordangen Ardfinnan and Clonmel.

  • Hi ColCaff

Thank you so much for your replies which I am going to study and absorb.  You are so kind to be taking an interest in this for me and I really appreciate your time.  I am not sure how to message the Tipperary Board but I will give it a try.  Regards V.
