Hello -- I am researching an ancestor who emigrated to the U.S. from Tipperary named Martin Vaughan. The headstone erected by his wife says that he was born in Baile an Gharrai, and I am not sure what parish that is, or if it's a parish at all. (Does it mean Ballingarry?) According to family records, he was born in 1815 and came to the U.S. in 1845. Unfortunately, I don't know his parents' names, but I do know from letters that he had a brother named William who also emigrated to the U.S.
In the U.S., he married Catherine O'Brien (also from Tipperary though I don't know the parish), had four children--Nora, Mary, Patrick, and Elizabeth--and died in the Civil War in 1862. I would love to know where he was originally from. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thank you! --Michele

Hi Michele . . .
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . . and to North Tipperary . . .
Glad to try . . . to add to your search . . . .
___________________________________________________
First . . I went to Google Maps . . . I entered your Gaelic placename . . (see below)
It chose " BALLINGARRY " . . in NORTH Tipperary . . .
But . . . you have to be aware . . . there are three Ballingarries in Ireland . . . two in Tipp. . . one North . . . and one South
the remainding one is in Limerick . . .
___________________________________________________________ . .
BIRTH . . . . Martin . . . William . . . Tipp. and all Ireland 1815 +/- 10 yrs .
So . . when I search . . . I rely on " Roots " . . a very reliable (Paid) search engine . . .
I search MARTIN . . . b. 1815 +/- 10yrs. . . .Tipperary . . . Nothing . . . then ALL Ireland . . . Nothing . . . same hor William
Next I try . . . Ancestry . . with NO further joy . . .

Next I turned to . . . http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=Vaughan&firstname=&county=Tipperary&townland=&parish=&search=Search&sort=&pageSize=&pager.offset=0
This is a TAX roll . . . from 1823 - 1837 . . . all Ireland . . . Property / Landowners . . .
( see map below . . . Ballingarry SOUTH Tipperary ) . . .
if you look at page 4 . . of the above . . .the very last entry . . is for Mullinahone . . .
this caught my eye . . because it is adjacent . . . to Ballingarry SOUTH Tipp.
_____________________________________________________--
then Limerick . . .
NO joy there
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next to . . . Griffiths Vaaluations ( 1847 - 1864) . . . another TAX roll ( great people for collecting taxes . . back then . . has anything changed ?) . . NO Joy . .
_______________________________________________________________________
Next . . . something promising . . .
In the 1901 National Census . . . for Vaughan . . . Tipperary . . . see
here you see a number of VAUGHAN families (1901) . . . listed for BALLINGARRY . . . NORTH Tipp.
But . . then again . . . when I search further . . . I find a lot of Vaughans . . . living (1901) in Mullinahone SOUTH Tipp . . . near Ballingarry S.Tipp
__________________________________________________________
So . . . are you thoroughly confused by now ??
Conclusion . . . Your Vaughans . . . I'm guessing . . . most likely . . . came from either Ballingarry N.Tipp . . . or . . . Mullinahone S.Tipp . . .

Hello Eamonn, and thank you for all of this valuable information. It will defiitely help me as I continue to search for Martin. The 1901 census is interesting because I notice there's a 75-year-old lady named Mary living at the house, and Martin named his youngest daughter Mary -- I wonder if this Mary in 1901 could be his younger sister. Obviously it's a very common name, though. I also see there's a female relative living at the house with the last name O'Brien, and that's the same last name as Martin's wife, Catherine, who was also from Tipperary. Again, a common name I know, but I wonder if the two families were connected across multiple generations.
Anyway, I so appreciate this help! Thank you again, Michele
