Hi y'all.  I'm Michele and I have ancestors who come from Wexford area of Ireland. I've been trying to find the birth record of a Mary Ann Savage, who was born in Wexford area sometime around April 1870-April 1880.                                                              She emigrated to USA in 1897, and later married Michael Codd (also from Wexford) in 1903 in Baltimore, Maryland. She died in Maryland in 1949.  I've been unable to definitively confirm her birth date and her parents' names, because of conflicting information given in various USA censuses, marriage certificate, and death record.                                                    For example, in her marriage record, she is listed as Emma Savage, and her parents being Phillip and Marian Savage.            On her death record, her parents are listed as Daniel and Mary Savage.                                                                                      My cousin thinks Mary Ann Savage's parents are Philip Savage (1843-1881) and Mary Fitzgerald (1845-1891).                         Any assistance y'all could give me would be fantastic.  Thanks!

  • Hi Michele,

I'm not sure whether this is any help but here are two records from www.rootsireland.ie/; they are the two 1870-80 - one Mary Anne & 1 Mary (no Emmas):

See the sixth record on this link  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1870/03344/2226066.pdf  This record confirms your cousin's info and matches the marriage record info. I would give the marriage record more weight than a death record because Mary Anne provided the marriage parental info but someone else provied the parental info on the death record.

The first baptismal record that Col located also lines up with the civil record except the date of birth is three days different and the father was shown as William not Philip. I would be very surprised that there were two different Mary Anne Savage births three days apart in the same area with the correct father's surname and the correct name for the mother.

  • Thanks, Col...I hate to ask this, but what is "R C?"   Did you mean Roman Catholic?  If so, I'm not sure.  I think she was Catholic, but I'm not 100% certain if she was a Roman Catholic.  I can only say for sure she was a Catholic.

  • Roger, thanks for your thoughts. The reason I take Mary Ann Savage's death record seriously is because her daughter Elizabeth reported all the information on the death record.  I find it hard to believe that her daughter Elizabeth (who was my grandmother) would have gotten her grandfather's name wrong on the death record. (Elizabeth was 46 years old when Mary Ann died...and I don't think there was anything wrong with her memory at that age.)  Another cousin of mine says it's possible for a relative to get a close relative's name wrong on a document...but I don't know.                            So if we go by the record you and Col found, the full name is Patrick William Savage, or William Patrick Savage? Is it at all possible that this guy would have had three names? As in maybe Patrick William Daniel Savage or William Patrick Daniel Savage?  Was it usual for Irish men to have more than two names?                                                                                                                                    BTW, I had a tough time reading the handwriting on that record link...as best as I could figure, it looks like: 13 April 1870 Castle.... Wexford / Mary / Female / Philip Savage Castle.... / Mary Savage [...] Fitzgerald / Sailor / Mary & [...] Savage [...] Mother Castle... / 20 May 1870 / [....] Registrar

Did I get most of it right?  Can you or Col decipher the letters after "Castle?"  Again, thanks so much, Roger (and Col)!

  • Michele:

The record indicates that Mary Savage was born April 13th 1870. Her parents were Philip Savage amd Mary Savage formerly Fitzgerald. They lived on Castle Street in Wexford town. Father's occupation was sailor and the birth was registered on May 20, 1870.

I would discount Patrick completely. Patrick was shown on a completely different record in 1878. Generally, Irish men would not have two names. I'm somewhat baffled by the William on the baptismal record and the Philip on the civil record. This assumes there were not two Mary Anne Savage births in Wexford town around April 13-16.
