Hello,

my great grandmother Mary Bridget Hogan was born Jan 1, 1861 in Ireland.  She emigrated to the US c-1873 and resided in both Youngstown and Toledo Ohio. She married Patrick Edward Finn in Youngstown on 20Nov1879.  Her birth date of January 1, 1861 was consistent throughout documentation in her lifetime of living in the states, however, place of birth in Ireland was never mentioned.

I found a baptism record for a Mary Hogan, baptized 27jan1861 in Ballinrobe county Mayo, father Michael Hogan and mother’s name was Mary, no maiden name listed.  This is the closest I could find to her birth date.  How can I be sure I have the right info.  Any suggestions as to where and what else I can check.  Thank you!

Many Irish immigrants changed their year of birth and sometimes their day of birth when they came to their new country. Your info indicates that Mary Bridget was 18 when she married which is young. In my view, she was likely born sometime between 1855-1860. I don't know when she died but can you locate her death record or possibly an obit which might provide her parents names? Civil registration in Ireland for births did not begin until 1864 so we will have to rely on available church records.

The surname Hogan by the way was mainly found in Co. Tipperary, Co. Limerick, Co. Cork but the surname was also found in other counties including Co. Mayo.

Have you considered DNA testing? Possibly you will have matches with people who have Hogan connections and have more info on the origins of the family in Ireland.

Let me know if you have any questions.
