I am would love to  know where in Ireland my g g grandmother, Mary Dunn, was from.  She was in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1851.  She had a sister, Anne and a brother William.  She married John McGoogan, in Hamilton in about 1852.  They had three children, William John, Andrew, and Mary Ann (Molly).  They emigrated to St. Louis, Mo in 1875.  Any information would be wonderful!  Thank you!

  • Lynn,

The name Mary Dunn is fairly common in Ireland. In the 1901 census there were 162 people of that name. It would have been equally common in the 1830s. You really need to try and get your Mary’s parents names from perhaps her marriage or death certificates, to be sure of identifying the right one.

You can use this site to see where the Surname Dunn was found in the mid 1800s. It was spread fairly evenly around but with the most in Co. Offaly.

Your Mary’s denomination might also help. If she was Protestant there’s a likelihood she may have come from the counties of what is now Northern Ireland (based on the religious distributions in the 1901 census).

  • Thank you for the replies!  Her very common name has made it more difficult to find any information about her.  She was Catholic.  The man she married, my gg grandfather was Protestant and from County Antrim.  I have been looking for their marriage record in Hamilton for several years!  I will continue to search for it. John became Catholic and they raised their childrem Catholic. Take care!
