My 2 X Great Grandmother is Mary Gaffney. She was born in abt 1820. I'm told that she most likely was born in County Cavan. She traveled to Australia in the early 1840s, married Michael Walsh in 1843 in New South Wales, and came to San Francisco in 1852. My goal is to trace her origins in Ireland.

I recently had a DNA match with a Gaffney family in Kilbride, County Cavan. I'm now tracing their tree upwards to hopefully find Mary. I'm looking for info on a Bernard Gaffney and his wife Rose Anne Gaffney (maiden name unknown). They were born sometime between 1890 and 1900. They had seven children, including Rose, Annie, and Eugene, born in the late 1910s and 1920s. I believe they had a farm in Mountnugent.

Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks for your consideration and kindness. Hope to visit Cavan with my wife next year.

Bernard and Roseanne were married in 1915 in Mountnugent church. See fourth record. Roseanne's maiden name was also Gaffney. Father of Bernard was John and father of Roseanne was Eugene. Bernard was at least 21 but Roseanne was under 21.

Bernard was baptized on December 25 1884. Father was John Gaffney and mother Katie Hanly. They lived in Kilbride.

I located a chruch marriage record for John Gaffney and Catherine Hanly on May 25 1871 at Castlerahan RC church. I was not able to find a civil marriage record which is unfortunate since the name of John's father would have been listed.

Roseanne was born in 1897. Her father was Owen Gaffney mother Anne Daly.

Owen and Anne were married in 1879. See third record. Father of Owen was John father of Anne was also John. Owen was 21+ while Anne was 20.

I did not find a baptismal record for an Owen Gaffney with father John. There was an Eugene Gaffney baptized August 7 1853 in Cavan town RC church. Father John Gaffney mother Joanna Nethercoat. I did not locate a marriage record for that couple.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Extraordinary work! I can't thank you enough, Roger. I'm left with one question for you. When you look at Rose Anne Gaffney, is her father Eugene (as stated in marriage record) or Owen (as stated in birth record)?

I think I've got one generation more to go up. My plan is to find out more about Owen's father John Gaffney and to find Bernard's paternal Grandfather (name unknown). Does this sound right to you?

    With much gratitude,

    Jerry

Owen and Eugene are interchangeable. Here is one source but you will find a lot more with a Google search.  https://www.libraryireland.com/names/men/eoghan-eoghan.php

Your strategy is on target. As I said in my first response, not having the 1871 civil marriage record is unfortunate. Civil registration of RC marriages started in 1864 (non-RC started 1845) but takeup was not 100% in the early years. My guess is that the marriage was not registered.
