I am coming to Ireland this summer and am excited to look up and discover the areas that my ancestors came from. I have family on my father's side of the family that came from Heir Island and have also discovered that I have a great great grandmother who is from Cork on my mother's side of the family. In fact all of my ancestors are from Ireland on both sides of the family going back to the early 1800's. Most of my ancestors arrived during or soon after the potatoe famine.
My great great grandmother's name was Mary Mally (or Malley) born on 14 May 1844. Any assistance you can offer would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Susan Shannon Riederer

Dear Susan:
Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site.
Do you have any further information about your ancestor, Mary Malley? Her parents' names? I have found several church records for a Mary Malley, but it would be great to try to narrow it down.
As to your Heir Island connections, I will forward your post to one of our local volunteers in that area who will be able to assist you.
You can reply to me via this thread, or alternatively you can email me with further information on Mary Malley at my address: jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com
The very best of luck to you with your research. Please let us know if we can assist you further with your upcoming trip.
Kind regards,
Jane

Hi Susan,
Had an initial look at records for Mary Mally/Malley/Maly, one of which turned up a record for a Mary Maly in the East Schull area but while the year was too early to be her, it may have been an earlier member of her family from whom she got her name and whose family lived on Heir Island at a later stage. Heir Island is only about six miles from where I live.
As Jane said in her response above, do you have any further information on Mary's parents or Grand parents. Malley under any spelling is not a name that frequently occurs in this area but there are a few. Any little further detail could be of vital importance.
