I am seeking assistance with information relating to the Parish of my GG Grandmother, Mary Maloney (or variant spelling). Mary is believed to have been born around 1828 to 1831 in either County Limerick. She is believed to have migrated to Australia about 1853-1854 and married John Cleary in Melbourne in June 1854. They settled in the Ballarat area of Victoria where John was a gold digger for some time but then became a farmer/grazier.

Mary's marriage certificate shows her place of birth as County Limerick and her father as Michael Malony, mother Margaret Bourke. Alternatively, her death certificate records her father as William Maloney, mother Margaret Bourke.

Any knowledge of Mary's Parish of birth or her family would be appreciated.

    Subscription site www.rootsireland.ie  and www.findmypast.ie  have a record of the marriage of a Michael Moloney to Margaret Burke in the parish of Dromin-Athlacca which is in the Barony of Coshma and Poor Law Union of Killmallock.

    Date of Marriage: January 13th 1820.  No record for Mary with parents Michael Moloney and Margaret Burke found - 1820 - 1835.

    The parish marriage record is difficult to read!

  • Hi McCoy. Thank you for your assistance once again. I don't subscribe to either of these services, but often do some research on Findmypast via short term subscriptions/freebys. But must have missed this marriage; perhaps focussing too much on births.

    You have given me a good start to work on. The marriage record is poor quality as you say and is hard to read; maybe it is written in latin. See where it takes us.

    Please see attached record of a baptism in the parish of Bruff in 1831 - Maria Moloney. - March 14th - Middle of right hand page.

    Parents: Michael Moloney and Ellen Burke. Baptismal Sponsor: Catherine Joyce. Bruff is in the same general area as Dromin and Athlacca.

    I have checked the Tithe Records for a "Moloney" in the parish of Dromin with negative results.
