I Have found a Extract from Census return of 1851. Full name of applicant is Mary Ann McCarten.   Address Mrs O Brien, Spirit Merchant, Castlewellan  Full names of father and mother of applicant Michael and Mary McCarten, maiden name O'Hear.

County Down, Barony Iveagh Up lr 1/2, Parish Kilcoo, Townland Drumena.   Searched 2.1.17.   Has a few other numbers at the top of the form.

My query from Aust. doing research into the O'Hear for many years without success, could this Mary O'Hear be related to our Joseph O'Hear who married Ellen Storeman, not sure where.  Was in Australia in 1861 in Bombala NSW when his daughter Florence Emeline O'Hear was born.       If anyone has any ideas or could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

  • Shirley Ann,

What the pension documentation tells you is that Mary Ann McCartan was probably 70 in 1917. That was the qualifying age for the old age pension and she needed proof of her age to qualify. She presumably didn’t have a baptismal certificate to show and so she asked for a search of the 1851 census.

She said that in 1851 she was living in Drumena townland (parish of Kilcoo) and that her parents were Michael McCartan & Mary O’Hear. It isn’t totally clear but it looks as though the 1851 census confirmed that information and so a form was sent to her on 8.1.1917.

She apparently didn’t marry and so presumably left no descendants to compare DNA with. However she looks to have had siblings Cath(erine)  bapt 14.6.1845 and Owen 23.4.1849, Michael 29.8.1842, Ellen 20.7.1851, all born in Drumena. Possibly there were others. I suppose you could trace what happened to them and if they have living descendants try for a DNA comparison.

Kilcoo RC parish only has records back to 1832 so tracing backwards by conventional paper records will probably be very challenging.
