I posted that in other forums - due to no reply here as well!

Matthew ACHESON b. abt 1802 (different spelling ATCHESON / ACHISON possible), carpenter, was married with Catherine b. abt 1803 (maiden name SHEEHAN) and they lived in Clogheen.

They emigrated 1841 with their three daughters on the ship Argyle to Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria, AUS.

On the same ship was the unmarried Daniel FARREL b. abt 1816, laborer, as well from Clogheen.

Six years later, 1847 Daniel FARREL married one of the ACHESON daughters, Catherine b. abt 1825 in the RC Church St. Francis Melbourne.

The above Matthew ACHESON is possibly the brother of my ggggrandfather Robert ACHESON, b. abt 1789, d. 1864, from Rehill, Shanrahan, Co. Tipperary.

My questions:
-Has somebody a connection to a Catherine SHEEHAN who was married around 1822 to Matthew Acheson in Clogheen and emigrated 1841 to AUS?
-Is somebody familiar with the ancestry of Daniel FARREL (Farrell) of Clogheen who emigrated as well 1841 to Port Phillip, Victoria, AUS?

-If somebody sees a connection to Matthew ACHESON and Catherine SHEEHAN - and has made a DNA test - I would like to check, if there is a small match.

I checked the subscription site FindMyPast.ie and did not locate any baptismal records for the three children in Co. Tipperary. What religious denomination? Roman Catholic or Church of Ireland? Here is the parish register for Clogheen RC parish. Baptismal records start in 1809.

  • Hello Roger

Thank you very much for the link of the catholic church records. I quickly checked the marriage entries. Most likely the couple had a mixed marriage.

My Acheson relatives were Church of Ireland members.

There is a mixed marriage of my gggrandfather John Acheson with Ellen Coffey. These children were baptised in the CoI.

In Clonmel is an Acheson line which converted, but most likely later than Matthew Acheson married Catherine Sheehan.

From what I can see, I don't think a marriage record would be available in either Clogheen or Clonmel C of I parishes.

  • Yes Roger, the CoI records are all burnt from that parishes!

I anyway have still not found out where my Acheson ancestry from Rehill went to church.

In Loughkent Lower (old graveyard with ruined church, but still in use, outside New Inn) I found three headstones belonging together. One is for my gggggrandfather John Acheson b. 1750, d. 1829 who was married with Mary Rainsberry b. 1759, d. 1831 from Jossestown near Fethard. This graveyard is about in between Jossestown and Rehill townlands, from both in distance of abt. 20 km!

The only connection between the surname Acheson / Atcheson and the townland Woodingstown which is the neighboured townland of Loughkent Lower I found in the Irish Deeds Project. There was around 1711 James Atcheson a witness, and he was from Woodingstown. By generation I cannot connect him to my John Acheson from Rehill...

Actually I would like to meet somebody who is specialized in genealogy on this southern area of Tipperary South Riding and the CoI...
