Hi all, I’m trying to find birth records for my great grandfather who originated from Killarney. His name was Maurice Tangny and according to his marriage certificate and various census records he was born in 1827. However the only Maurice Tangny baptism I can find is in 1822. In the Irish Genealogy site there is a baptism entry for a Mary Tangny in August 1827 and the same parents had a Patrick Tangny born in 1820 who I believe was Maurice’s brother. I have attached a pic of the original record as I am unsure as to whether the recorded name is actually Maurice and not Maria as transcribed. If there are any handwriting experts out there I would appreciate their opinion. Thanks in advance.

  • https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M72B-TKV Record for a Maurice Tangny birth year 1827. Could this be your relative ?   Do you have his spouses name from the marriage cert as there are many Maurice Tangny (Tangney) on record and it would help to have the name of his spouse.

  • Hi Eileen, Thanks for your reply. It is indeed my grandfather and I have census records from 1851 through to 1881 for him and his wife Mary Brown. According to one census she was from Dingle. They were married in London in 1854. I’m struggling to find anything about their earlier life though.

    Regards,

    John

  • Hi Patricia,

Thanks for your reply. I think 1937 is too late as the 1951 census shows Maurice as being aged 23 and his partner Mary as 19 which is consistent with their subsequent marriage certificate and other census records.

    Regards,

    John

Dingle | Microfilm 04277 / 02 Baptisms 1830 July    I have checked the Dingle parish register and found an entry for Mary Brown , the entry is of poor quality and I am estimating the birth date as around July 20th, unfortunately my eyesight is not good but you may be able to see more than I can. Mary's name is the second under the name Breen. It proves she was from Dingle.

  • Hi Eileen,

Many thanks for the info. That’s another wee step forward. Glad I don’t have to transcribe these pages, they’re so difficult to make out!

    Regards,

    John
