  • HI Reayson, in Drogheda there was one main old graveyard known as Cord Road, it is currently closed for cleaning etc and has not been in use in recent times, not sure when it closed but we are talking many many decades, the headstones have been transcribed and McAleer does not appear to be on them, however during the recent past some more a few gravestones have been uncovered during the cleaning which is been carried out by the Drogheda Civic Trust (they are on Facebook but mainly inactive in the last 2 years).

The 2 main RC graveyards are St Peters on the northside of the town in the diocese of Armagh and Calvery on the St Side of the town in the dioces of Meath, Calvery opened in 1902, not sure about St Peters but about that time too.

I have checked the listings of Calvary and there are more recent McAleer graves listed, one family in 1949 and another started in 1959, last internment in 2000.

This website has the listing of a lot of the graves in Drogheda and Louth, there are only a few McAleer hits. http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/

I have also checked the listings of the two Church of Ireland Graveyards but no McAleer listed. There are of course many graveyards around the town as Drogheda was a major industrial area in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

I am not local but there is a Facebook Page called Drogheda Down Memory Land -  Lost Families and there is a lot of local input, it is a closed group but you just ask and post, you may get lucky but some posters are not evidence based but may know a local of that name. There is a 9 minute You tube called Ghosts of Drogheda a series of old still pictures of the town and is quiet enjoyable.

I have access to the grave inscriptions of the Calvary headstones but would prefer not to post them, they are in a book, you can mail me at stpeters@irelandxo.com if you want them but they are more recent than your query.

    Good Luck
