My Great Grandad Patrick McCann was born 1850, his parents were Bernard (maybe called Barney) McCann and Rosa McCreekan according to those names on Patrick,s marriage record,but I don,t think McCreekan is the correct spelling of this name,after countless searches for Patrick,s parents I still cannot find them.

Patrick came to Scotland in 1874 (I presume) and married Ann Boyle who was also from Ireland,according to the 1881 census,they married in Carluke parish then moved to Coatbridge,Lanarkshire. I am not sure which County Patrick came from, we always thought it was Armagh,but I can,t find him there although I,ve searched hundreds of McCann,s.also Iv,e searched other Counties in the North, I think I,m hitting a brick  wall with the McCreekan name,it has probably been written down by the Scottish clerk as he heard it, on  Patrick,s  death record 1931 the name is now written as McCrechan, the frustrations of Genealogy!  any McCann,s out there with these ancestors?

    How frustrating indeed! A change in the spelling of a surname is quite common. Have you checked the marriage record for Patrick and Ann? It might offer up more clues for you. You might need to check the National Archives UK records for this. Unfortunately, not having a more exact location makes your search very difficult. I could suggest a number of avenues, but without even having a county, makes this search not unlike a needle in a haystack.

    You could try searching for Patrick's parents in the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available online at www.askaboutireland.com It is a bit of a longshot, but maybe it's still worth pursuing.

  • Hello,

    I've got some McCann ancestors myself in the U.S. (Kentucky), and one b. 1760 in Co. Tyrone had a brother

    Patrick b. 1777 Co. Armagh who ended up sent to New South Wales under a death sentence.  That doesn't do you

    much good, but in Kentucky, McCracken is a fairly common name - you might try that spelling.  Good luck with

    your search.
