I am descended from Charles McCarthy and Mary Martin of Ballygiblin (Griffiths Valuation 1848) who farmed land next to William and Margaret Casey (nee Sheehy). Charle and Mary had the following children: Owen born 1818, Johanna 1818 (twins?), Julia 1819, Jonny 1821, John 1823, Thomas 1825, Mary 1828, Patrick 1832, Jane 1834, and William 1838. I am descended from John McCarthy who married the girl next door Catherine Casey after they both arrived in Australia. William and Margaret Casey had the following children: Patrick1828, Catherine 1829, Elizabeth 1832, Michael 1835, Mary 1838 and William 1841.

I visited Mitchelstown in 1984 and interviewed John Moher and spoke with various other people including the Casey sisters, to whom he introduced me. I visited the townloand nad had lunch with a lovely family who fed me without knowing me from Adam. I searched the Parish birth register to which I was given access by the curate at the time.

I would be grateful for any information about the son Patrick McCarthy who we believe stayed behind in when hte siblings emmigrated over about 15-20 years. Mary (nee Martin) died in Australia but we have no record of her husband Charles' death.

If anyone knows of descendents of Patrick or other McCarthy's who may be connected to the Ballygiblin McCarthy's I would be grateful.

Many thanks for the opportunity.

  • Hello

I made some enquiries and no one has any recolection of a McCarthy family ever living at this location .A road was built straight through the piece of land (as a famine relief work project) which they occupied and the landlord could possibly have moved them elsewhere. On the other hand the casey farm is still there today with the field boundries still in tact which is quiet unusual. The land is no longer owned by caseys but the person who now owns it inherited it from the caseys. They were known as the "garret" Caseys. When you have a lot of families with the same name they give them "?????" names to destinguish one family from another.

Will make a few more enquiries and see if I can come up with anything.

    Regards,

  • Hi,

My name is Michael McCarthy. My g g g grandfather was Denis McCarthy who came over to Canada, to the Peterborough area, in 1825 with other Peter Robinson Settlers.  The ship's registry, The Fortitude, shows him coming from Brigown and sponsored by the Earl of Kingston with his family.  Our family has had a professional genealogist research the McCarthy family and found a record for his son William McCarthy b 3 Mar 1816, baptised 3 Mar 1816 in Balygiblin. The father was Denis McCarthy and mother Johanna Dillon.  The sponsors were:  Andrew Dillon and Bridget Dillon.  Denis settled in Douro Township, Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada - concession 8 lot 6.

I am family with the Griffiths Valuation and both Denis McCarthy and Charles McCarthy.  I believe that Denis is the first born son of the Denis McCarthy who came to Canada and stayed behind. I suspect that Charles is a cousin since none of the McCarthys ever named a child Charles.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Michael McCarthy

  • Michael

Thank you so much for making your comment. This is a wonderful connection. I have Denis and Johanna in my database too. I believe Denis and Charles were either brothers or cousins. I will explore teh information I have and forward anything I have to you. However, I think you have more than I have managed to accumulate as I have done it on my own and the professionals always seem to be able to find out more.

I find it very interesting that your name is Michael. This is a common name in my family. My father was Michael and I have a nephew Michael. Please stay in touch.

    regards

  • This is an old thread but I do have some information to add.

My ancestor is Denis McCarthy who married Ann Barrett in 1848. Their parents are unknown at this time. Their wedding record indicates that Denis was from Mitchelstown and Ann from Annagh. Witnesses at their wedding were Thomas Martin & Patrick Phelan. Denis died in 1871 at Curraghavoe (border townland to Ballygiblin) at the age of 55 from bronchitis /asthma. Ann died in 1895 at 73 years old from senile decay. She was living with her daughter's family in Galbally.

Denis and Ann had 3 children that I know of:

    1. Mary born in Ballygiblin in 1855 (Baptism sponsors were John Lahy and Bridget Moloney). She married Bartholomew Patrick Berigan in 1873. (Wintesses were John Condon and Mary Barrett). She had two children but died at only 23 years old in Ballygiblin in 1878. (Cause of death was not noted; just the fact that she had been certified with something for over two years.)

    2. Ann born in Ballygiblin in 1857 (Baptism sponsors were Michael Casey and Mary Hayes). She married Thomas Wallace in 1877. Witnesses were John Wallace and Jane Mahony. She went on to live her live in Derryvillane and gave birth to about 17 children. She died in 1911 at 53 years old from an intenstinal obstruction.

    3. Honora born in Ballygiblin in 1860 (Baptism sponsors were William Quinlan and Ellen Mahoney). She married William Wallace in 1881. (William was the brother of Ann's husband Thomas. Witnesses at the wedding were Patrick Berrigan and Garrett Casey.) She lived in Galbally and her husband William was a shopkeeper there. They had at least 9 children. She died at 48 years old in 1908 from cancer.

  • I might add that the only possible birth record of my Denis McCarthy (1816-1871) I could find is:

Denis McCarthy, Ballygiblin, baptism 03 Feb 1816; parents: Bartholomew McCarthy and Margaret Connors; godparents: Jeremiah and Bridget Quinlan
     - this Bart / Margaret Mary Connors also had a son named Bart in 1815; can't find death record
    - possibly a son named Edmond born 28 Jun 1828 to Patrick and Mary Connors
