Hi. I am trying to find the McCartney family from, what is believed, the Desertmartin area. Tullyroan/Ballyronan??

What I know, of what line is:

Patrick McCartney (c1804-1874 Derry) married (1830?) Bridget Higgins (of Armagh?)

Patrick (c1842-1892 Derry)

John (c1838-1912 Derry)

William (c1840-1906 Derry)

Hannah (c1832 -1858 Derry)

James (c1833-1903 at sea en route to Australia)

Isabella (c1845-1905 Derry)

Catherine (c1848-1927 Derry)

Hugh (c1831-1858 at sea?)

Elizabeth (c1846-1912 Derry)

Although I have found some information of some of the children's lives, marriages/children, I was hoping to find the early days of this family, and the McCartney family as a whole, before they came to Derry.

Thank you

Jacqui

  • Jacqui,

I can’t find a death for Patrick McCartney aged around 70 in 1874, around Desertmartin. Nearest was 16.1.1873 aged 80. Registered in Magherafelt. Have a look at that and let me know if it’s the right one. We may then be able to use the information on it, to find out a bit more about this family. You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

Post a copy of the certificate or a transcript here, and I’ll see if I can assist further.

I noticed this family in the 1901 & 1911 censuses. The census contains some of the siblings names you have mentioned (ie John, William & Isabella in 1901, and Catherine & Elizabeth in 1911). My only hesitation is that the census family live at the other end of Co Derry from Desertmartin. How sure are you that your family came from the Desertmartin area?

    Probate abstract for John:

Probate of the Will with one Codicil of John McCartney late of Pennyburn House Londonderry J.P. who died 31 May 1912 granted at Londonderry to Bernard Doherty J.P. and William Ferguson Teacher (Retired). Effects £4,890 6s. 9d.

JP means Justice of the Peace. So John was clearly a respected member of the community. He could authorise search warrants for the police. That sort of thing. The will itself should be in PRONI in paper format.

  • John Mccartney JP was my great grand-uncle and head of the Mccartney family in Pennyburn House , Pennyburn ,Derry. It was there that people such as Parnell would visit because the Irish land league were prohibited from holding meeting in public places. My grand mother , Catherine (Kathleen) was John Mccartney's niece and lived at pennyburn until she left an became a nurse in england  at the beginning of 1900s. Her mother was Catherine O'Neill. and father Patrick Mccartney (John's brother)
