I am looking for the place that my ggrandfather emigrated from in Ireland.
Francis McCloskey b 1830 somewhere in Ireland.
emigrated to the US after the famine,
Married in Philadelphia, PA in 1863.
was in the US Navy during the American Civil War (1860-1863), worked in the merchant marine after that. Disappeared in 1873.
His network of friends and family are what I'm trying to use to pinpoint where he may have come from.
A fellow sailor was Roger Cassidy, who married Francis' sister.
Roger's sister Mary married Anthony McBrearty.
I believe that McCloskey, Cassidy and McBrearty came from the same area and migrated to the same place in Philadelphia.
McBrearty comes from Killibegs, Donegal.
I see in the 1834 Tithe Applotment books an entry in Donegal for a McCloskey. When you look at the image, it says Cassidy & McCloskey.
This page was for RAPHOE.
Can anyone in south eastern Donegal find a McCloskey household in the 1830s?
What about now? Any McCloskeys in southeast Donegal today?
Is there any place where McCloskey, Cassidy and McBrearty are in close proximity - clustering around Donegal town, perhaps?
Are there emigration records specifically for Donegal?
I'm looking for leads and new places to search.
This has been a wonderful site, from the responses I've been reading on other boards.
Thanks!

Hi Colleen,
Thank you very much for your message.
I found the page you mentioned in the Tithe Applotment Books, the entry is for the diocese of Raphoe but for the parish of Killaghtee:
As you can see from the link above, McBrearty and Cassidy were in the top 5 most common surnames in the parish in 1857.
There were 10 McCloskey households recorded in Killymard parish the same year-this is two parishes over form Killaghtee:
There were also some recorded in the parish of Inver which lies between the two:
You can see who these McCloskey?s were in Griffith?s Valuation ( a property survey carried out 1848-1864)
As you can see from the above link one of the McCloskey?s listed is a Francis. Was your Francis still in Ireland in 1857?
Is it possible that this is the area where the families were from?
We have a volunteer in place in Killaghtee parish so I suggest that you join that parish page and post your message there. Our volunteer will then get back to you in due course and will hopefully be able to assist you or advise you further. Here is the link to the parish page:

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Kind regards,
