Hello,

I am looking for the ancestors/birthplace of my great great grandfather William Mcdermott (b. about 1821) and his wife Catherine Higgins (b. about 1828). William's father's name was Daniel McDermott. Catherine's father was Thomas Higgins. William and Catherine married 1851 in West Bromwich, Lancashire, UK. I have excellent records for my family from the UK to the USA, but little to go on in Ireland. After getting William and Catherine's children's baptism records from England and looking at the surnames of the godparents - Joyce (2), Kenny(2), Burke (2), McHugh, Conry, Morris, Malloy, and Hopkins. I am leaning toward the area where Mayo, Galway and Roscommon come together.

I did find a Daniel McDermott in Templetopher parish Galway from the tithe applotments 1833, and there were many of the names above close by. I could not find Daniel in the Griffith's valuation 1855, however.

Sorry to be so long winded in the message, but I wanted you to know that I have researched pretty much all available on line records.

Thank You,

Mark McDermott

  • Hi Mark,

Thank you for your message. No apologies necessary the more information you give on what sources you have already used the better.

If you have already looked at all records online it may be an idea to start looking in church records to see if you can confirm any of the births in that parish. Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. Templetogher belongs to the Catholic parish of Boyounagh. http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Galway&CityCounty=East%20Galway&parish=Boyounagh&churchid=1051

It may be an idea to contact the East Galway Family History Society to see if they can offer any more assistance, however a fee may be involved. Here is their email: galwayroots@eircom.net

    Kind regards,

    Genealogy Support
