I am looking for any information on John McFadden and his wife Mary Gallagher.  John [jnr.] was born in county Donegal in about 1834 and another son of John and Mary, Edward migrated to the USA.  John [jnr.], migrated to NSW, Australia in about 1856, and married Giles Thourley in 1863.  Any information about John [jnr.] and his parents would be appreciated.  John [jnr.] died near Bathurst, NSW in 1914, aged 80 years.  He and Giles had a large family of eleven children.  I have information on their life in Australia, but nothing on the family in Ireland.  Many thanks.

  • Church records for the area do not begin until 1849 and civil registration of births started in 1864,   https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1016

McFadden is a very common surname in that area particularly in Clondahorky civil parish which is likely where you family was from. The 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Clondahorky civil parish shows over 20 John McFaddens who were heads of household in that parish.

Have you taken a general DNA test? Matches from a DNA test may help you pinpoint the townland where you family was from.

  • Hi, Do you have any info about when Edward was born? When he might have emigrated? Where he lived in the U.S.?  Did he return to Ireland? Thanks.
