I am looking for information on the family of Catherine McGrath, before 1840.   According to her Baptismal Certificate, she was born on 9 Mar 1824 in the parish of Dungaran, Diocese of Waterford and Lismore. Her parents were Richard McGrath and Anastasia Scocfield.  Witnesses at the baptism were Patrick and Hanora McNamara. She arrived in New York in 1841.  I would like information on her parents, Richard and Anastasia.

  • Dear Suz:

I have contacted a local volunteer who has shared this information for you:

The church records at NLI, is the only hope of picking up the trail, the other church records are later. I had a quick look through the Dungarvan Records, (St Mary's) but could not see an entry there for Richard's birth, 1798, and his wife 1800.
They should also look at Historic graves.ie. I have around 17 graveyards there. including the biggest, St Mary's.
There is no point in Checking the Abbeyside Church records, I have  carried out a thorough search, and while there are a number of McGraths, but nothing to connect to the enquiry. Records here begin in 1828.

Let me know if you need further information.  The Historic Graves website that is referred to is worth a look.  The website address is:  www.historicgraves.com

    All the best,

Thank you for your assistance.  I'm not sure if it will help, but I have added a picture of Catherine's Certificate of Baptism. I know that she travelled to New York on the ship, Cambridge, and arrived on 25 May 1841, with her mother Ann (Anastasia) McGrath.  She married Patrick Power abouby 1850.  Patrick was also from Waterford.  In looking through the church records from St. Mary's Church in Dungarvan, I saw many Power or Powers.  I wonder if the families knew each other, but I'm not sure.  They settled in Chicago, Illinois, and had six childeren.  Catherine died on 2 Oct 1923 at the age of 99.

    I will look at historicgraves.com.

    Thank you so much.
