My great great grandfather David McInerney emigrated to New York USA on 12th  July 1851 aged 6months. He was listed on the Enterprise with Samuel  McInerney(1811), Mack McInerney(1849), Johanna McInerney(1821) and Ellen McInerney(1819) coming from Liverpool. All were Irish immigrants. The next I have found is when he marries Alice Coleman in 1877 in Victoria Australia with the name David Melville. They have 4 children: Alice, Esther,David Henry and Evelin Christina all born Melville. The first time I can find his name as David MC J  Melville was when he married his second wife Rose Brady in 1894. His son David dies in 1902 as Melville David H MCI. His daughter marries in 1906 as Esther E MCI Melville. He dies as David MCInerney known as David McInerney Melville in 1909. I am trying to find out when he came to Australia and what was his reason for changing his surname to Melville. My email is: linjoy12002@yahoo.com.au, I am hoping someone can help. Thanks Lin

  • Hello Lin and welcome to Ireland Reaching Out

Lin do we know if his mother was Johanna or Ellen, looks like Samuel had 2 children David and Mack (unusual Irish name) travelling with 2 ladies Johanna and Ellen

I presume one of these ladies was his wife and maybe the other his (Samuel) sister.

Have you done your DNA to try and narrow down where in Ireland they might have come from

Is there any mention on any records of parents names or placenames in Ireland

David could have been born in England before they left for USA or in Ireland

    I will keep looking

    McEnerney

  • When I do a search for the name McInerney it mostly seems to be County Clare and Limerick areas, does that sound any way familiar

  • Hi Geraldine,

I am not sure who his mother or father are. The shipping information I saw did not have any relation noted. I did think it may have been Mick not Mack, ?transcription error. If Johanna or Ellen were his mother, maybe they married a Melville? On his marriage cert. witnesses were Morris Melville and Alice Melville(nee O'Connell). On his death cert. Father McInerney and Mother  Alice. I did think he may have been born in England, have not had a thorough searc for there, I will put that on my list. I am just starting my research into DNA, I have done my DNA. No  mention on any records of parents names or placenames in Ireland,, I am not sure where I got Limerick from.

    Thanks Lin
