Civil registration started in 1864. Prior to 1864 we rely on church records. The subscription site Roots Ireland had the Bernard McKeon baptismal reocrd from 1856 in Kilronan RC parish. Looks like Bernard may have been the oldest of nine children. The townland was shown as Culgorow. Possibly the townland was Cuiltygower.

Thank you very much Roger. That confirms what the family had been told. My father didn't talk about his father (maybe because he died before my father would have been interested in family stories). This is where my brick wall starts. I have followed a lot of false leads. I know that Thomas and Ann's children scattered around the world. My grandfather and one sister came to NZ. Some went to Australia and some to Scotland to work at the shale mines. Ann went to join one of her sons there (presumably after Thomas died) and is buried at Bathgate.
