I am looking for any leads on my husband’s 3x great grandfather, Martin McLaughlin, who was a Roman Catholic farmer.  I believe that he was born around 1828 (I do not know who his parents were), that he married in the early 1850s to Catherine Coyne, and that he died on April 15, 1902 in Derryherbert, Rinvyle.  I am particularly interested in finding his birth and marriage records, but any suggestions for where I might be able to find any kind of records would be much appreciated!  (The only ones I've found so far are a 1901 census record and his death record).

I am similarly looking for leads on his wife, Catherine Coyne.  The information I have suggests that she was born around 1833 in Rinvyle (I don’t know who her parents were either) and died on Sept. 13, 1920 in Derryherbert, Rinvyle. I am particularly interested in her birth and marriage records. The only records I have for her are the 1901 and 1911 census records.

Thank you!

  • Hi RJ,

Roman Catholic records for the parish of Ballinakill (Letterfrack) Diocese of Tuam are from 1869 Baptisms and Marriages. No record found on www.roots.ireland.ie. Microfilm 04218/07 for Ballinakill.

A Martin McLoughlin appears in records from April 1865 to 1890, mainly in the list of Dog Licences paid - www.findmypast.ie - Subscription Site.

The 1911 census records show Kate, 73 years in Derryherbert with daughter Mary and son Denis and grandchildren, some of whom were born in Canada and the US. She is recorded as having 10 children, 8 of whom were living in 1911.

  • RJ,

If you go to irishgenealogy.ie, you can search civil records for McLaughlin births. Use Clifden as registration district. There are several children for Martin and Catherine.
