Hi,I'm trying to find information about James McManus (born 1829) and Winifred Cannon (b 1829) but frustratingly I have no idea what part of Ireland they are from.  They ended up in Halifax, West Yorkshire at some point and were married there in 1850.  Their marriage certificate records that James' father was Patrick McManus and Winifred's father was Patrick Cannon.  I also believe that James' mum was called Ann/e McManus and was born around 1799.   James also had a brother called John McManus who was born in 1826.    I know it's a long shot with such little info but hope someone might be able to help.   Thanks, Clare :0)

  • Clare:

Many RC parishes do not have records back to 1829.

I looked at https://www.swilson.info/sdist.php  to see where surnames were found by county in the mid-1850s based on Griffiths Valuation data. See results. There were also smaller numbers in other counties.

    McManus Fermanagh 395 Cavan 136  Roscommon 115 Leitrim 70 Down 67 Mayo 53 Tyrone 51 Sligo 50 Antrim 47

    Cannon  Donegal  225  Leitrim 94 Mayo 80 Galway 75 Dublin 38

Have you explored DNA testing to see if you have close matches which have McManus or Cannon connections?

  • According to the website roots Ireland, a Winifred Cannon of Loughboy was baptized 8 Feb. 1824 in the RC parish of Aughrim, Co. Roscommon. Parents: Patrick, Mary Shannon. Sponsors: James McGuire, Honor McCormick.

There were a number of baptisms for Winifred Cannons. This was the closest one to 1829.

DNA testing might help determine if this is your Winifred.

    Also at RootsIreland:

    James McManus
    Baptized 14-Feb-1829
RC parish of CAVAN, Co. Cavan
    Parents Patrick and Anne McManus
    Sponsors Hugh and Eleanor McManus

    I hope this is helpful.
