Hello,

I would be really grateful if anyone can give any advice..

I am researching the McNally family from Monaghan. I know Patrick McNally was born about 1865 in Tonagh, and his father's name was also Patrick.  I'm trying to find his birth and hopefully his mother's maiden name.  Using Ancestry I've found several Patrick McNally baptisms in the area but none mention the actual birthplace.  Please could anyone let me know what church/parish people from Tonagh would have used for baptisms at that time?

Frustratingly, in the Catholic baptism records, I've found only one family with a father called Patrick McNally, which specifically states Tonagh as the birthplace of all his children, but none of the children is called Patrick.  The mother is Anne Brannon, but I can't be sure if this is the right family as I can't find if they had a son called Patrick.

Also on Griffiths valuation I've found a Patrick McNally residing in Tonagh, and managed to trace the buildings/land on a modern map -  I would really appreciate any thoughts or ideas on where to go from here.

Many thanks,

Shelagh

  • Shelagh,

what is your record of Patrick's birth? - is it on Irishgenealogy.ie

Have you found the family in the Irish census 1901/1911 ?

Have you found his marriage certificate and death cert - they might at minimum confirm his fathers name.

If he lived abroad there might be some clues on the census records.

  • Shelagh,

I forgot to include this link which might answer your parish query - http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/town_new2.php?MODE=search&TOWNLAND=Tona…

  • Hi Jim,

Thanks very much for your replies.  I have Patrick's marriage in liverpool in 1887, this is where I got his father's name Patrick from.  He is in the England census records from 1891 onwards, and this is where I got his approx year of birth from, and the place name Tonagh.  But I cannot find him in Ireland or England before that, and I can't find a death or burial - only several possibles in Liverpool.  Thanks for the link, looking at that helps narrow down the baptism search results.

  • Thanks for the link to irishgenealogy, the images give a lot more detail than ancestry.com does for the same records. I've found a Patrick Mcnally with a father called Patrick in Casleblaney which seems to cover Tonagh, in the right year. Now I've a possible mother's name, I have a bit of a possible lead to go on!

I am researching McNally from Clontibret, I can't say for sure that is where mine are from but research lead me there and several DNA match trees have McNally from Clontibret. My family starts with Elizabeth probably born from 1800-1810, she married a James McCaffrey and their eldest child Sarah was born in Monaghan, both family names are there in Tithe Applotment records too. I am unsure if Elizabeth and James came over to NYC with their 3 confirmed daughters, Sarah b.1830-1832, Anne b.1833-35 (my GG Grandmother) and Elizabeth b. 1833-37.Next door to Anna's Husband's family I found a Hugh McCaffrey with ties to Fermanagh on the other side is a Thomas McNally and a few doors down there are two McNally families, I believe Michael was the son of the elder Catherine, her husband Michael was already dead in 1856 but Catherine was born about the same time my GGG Grandmother would have been, probably a relation on some level.  Would love to hear from anybody with information on either family name in the area.

  • I am researching the McNally family from Tullycumaskey, Clontibret. My great grandmother was Ellen McNally McKearney (b. 1840, Clontibret), father Patrick McNally, mother Margaret (maiden name unknown). Ellen had a sibling, James McNally (b. circa 1833) who married Ann(e) Duffy (b. circa 1830) in County Monaghan. James McNally died at Tullycomasky in1888, Ann(e) Duffy McNally died in 1909 at Tullycomiskey. James and Ann(e) had seven children: Mary (b. circa 1857, d. 1914, Providence, R.I.), Rose (b. circa 1859, d. 1883, Rutherglen, Scotland), Ann (b. circa 1860), Francis (born 1861, d. 1924, Providence, R.I.), Ellen (b. 1864, d. 1941 Pawtucket [Providence], R.I.), James (b. 1863, d. 1944, Tullycomaskey), Patrick (b. 1866, d. 1933, Tullycomaskey).

My great grandmother Ellen McNally McKearney (these McKearneys from Crossdall, Armagh) emigrated to Rutherglen, Scotland in 1883 and to Providence, R.I. in 1894. It is clear that the McNallys above traveled along the same paths as the McNally-McKearneys. I am particularly interested in learning Ellen McNally's mother Margaret's maiden name. But, any information on these McNallys would be most helpful. Perhaps some of this might help those above in this thread.
