Hi -- My great-grandfather, William Maher, was born about 1850 in Greenspond, Newfoundland. I am trying to find out who his parents were. Most Irish immigrants to Newfoundland around that time were from either Tipperary or Waterford, because there was an established shipping route between Warerford City and St. John's, Newfoundland. Because Maher is a common name in Tipperary, I thought I'd start here. Rumour has it that three or four brothers emigrated together -- Edward, Patrick, possibly a Thomas and possibly a Joseph. They were all in the fishing industry. Unforturtunately, Newfoundland didn't keep any immigration records until they joined Canada in 1949. If anyone knows anything about these brothers, I would be very appreciative of hearing it. Thanks in advance.
