Dear all, hello

I am writing because I think my 3rd great grandfather Patrick Meehan, and his wife Jane Duffy, might have been from Cloonclare. They were married in Edinburgh in 1854, with witnesses Francis Cullen and Anna Owen(s).

According to the birth record of their daughter Mary, they were both from Leitrim.

Patrick was born c. 1820 to Patrick Meehan and Mary Cullen, according to his death registration in Scotland.

Jane Duffy was born c. 1830 to Michael Duffy and Jane Owen(s), according to her death registration. 

Cloonclare is where Meehan, Cullen, and Owens meet in Griffiths valuation, so I'm thinking it's a good place to start looking. 

Might there be a record for the births of Patrick and Jane, or the marriages of their parents, in Cloonclare?

Also, would it be traditional for relatives on your mother's side to be witnesses at your wedding, or do you think it was just who they could find in Scotland at the time?

    I had a look at the Cloonclare parish register online, but, unfortunately, the registers don't start until 1841 for baptisms and 1850 for marriages. If I find anything else of interest I will let you know. Here is the link to the parish records:

    My great grandfather, Bernard Meehan, was baptized in Cloonclere in September 1845. His parents were Cornelius Meehan (recorded as Myhan) and Catherine McGrath. The sponsor listed for his baptism is Patrick Meehan. I wonder if we have any ancestors in common. I have been searching for the Meehans for many years. The family emigrated to NY and Bernard ultimately  raised his family in Brooklyn.
