I saw someone searching Joseph Meere, who went back to Michael Meere, born 1824.

My ancestor is Catherine Meere, born about 1835 and her brother Michael, born about 1836 in Ennis, Clare.

Their parents were Matthew Meere, born 1806 and Bridget Mc.Guanne, born 1808.

Matthew's father was named Michael, we think.

That's as far as we have got, so any assistance would be gratefully accepted.

  • Hi Heatherb:

Welcome to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and the site!

You should take a look at the following websites where you will find a lot of information about County Clare families:

    http://www.ennisparish.com/genealogy/

A quick look at the above and there are a lot of Meere baptism entries.  Be sure to also check the marriage register on that site.

In addition, there is a very good library website that you should also look at.  This is the Clare Library website which has done tremendous work in making available local historical and genealogical information for all of County Clare.

    http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm

You may also wish to create a profile for one of your Meere ancestors through the  XO Chronicles which are located at the top of the page.

If you need any further assistance, please contact us.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Thank you Jane for your suggestions.

I know the Clare library site, but haven't used it for a while, and the Ennis site was quite new.

It all gives me new areas of thought and action.

    Thank you again.

  • Hi just wondering if you got anywhere with your search. I am looking into my ancestry too, my grandmother on my fathers side was Catherine Meere she was born in 1908 and died 1941 her father was Peter Meere, they lived in clarecastle Ennis. Not getting very far with my search, so many people with the same name! Do you think we could be related. My grandmother Catherine married Patrick Martin in 1935.

  • Hi Diane,

It's good to meet someone of the same line, but unfortunately, my Catherine Meere, daughter of Matthew, left Ennis and immigrated to Victoria, Australia in about 1854. She married William Farr and they produced four children before she died of TB in 1868. Tent dwelling on the goldfields was not for the faint hearted and it would have been so cold at night. Never the less, two of the four children thrived, and one was my maternal grandmother, who went on and gave birth to twelve children.

Catherine's brother Michael who was a little younger migrated two or three years after Catherine, moved to Bendigo, married and had two children. He died in a mine cave in, and his two children died in the next few months, but we have no idea what happened to his wife. The cave in was entirely the fault of the two miners as they erected no supports, and were warned of the dangers only a few minutes prior to a dirt cave in where Michael was suffocated.

I really have little idea of what happened to members of the family, other than parents Matthew and Bridget, who died in 1874 and 1877 respectively.

    best wishes with Meere digging.
